75 years of the NHS, yet still no provision for preventative diet and lifestyle support. As the health of Britain – “the fat man of Europe” - continues to deteriorate and our burden of people with chronic disease increases, CLARE GRUNDEL, Science and Education Manager at British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine - BANT says there many good reasons why its practitioners should be part of NHS Primary Care.

Science reveals link between gut health and exercise motivation

Could motivation to exercise be linked to our microbiome and the species of bacteria that reside in our gut?

And could this be why many people do not get the recommended amount of physical activity required for health?

Researchers treated mice with antibiotics and discovered these mice were getting less of a dopamine hit after their run potentially due to the specific reduction in two types of bacteria, Eubacterium Rectale and Coprococcus Eutactus (1).

The strains produce compounds called fatty acid amides that interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the gut. They found reduced gene expression in the cells' dopamine receptors — which release the neurochemical dopamine. So, mice treated with antibiotics were getting less of a feel-good, accomplished dopamine hit after their run.

As part of my batching cooking day I made this pasta sauce with onions, cherry tomatoes, green pepper, turmeric and stock. Once cooled I gave it a good blend and have boxed it up for individual portions in the freezer and fridge for the week ahead. It is the quickest meal to put together during the week which my 16 year old son loves to put together.

Now in mid September and all the fruits of the season are in. Apples, blackberries and cape gooseberries so I decided today to stew these and freeze some, use some for crumble and cool some for toppings for porridge and yoghurt in the week.
Batch cooking is so satisfying.

I have been using my Instant Pot for a few years now after seeing Danielle Walkers recommendation. It is the easiest way to make quick bone broth and a host of other meals. Costco online store currently has a discount on these appliances (no affiliation)

Do you prefer to make your bone broth in a slow cooker or an Instant Pot?

In the past, I would only make bone broth in a slow cooker, but once I tried it in my Instant Pot I was hooked. I like to make this Chicken Bone Broth on a regular basis for soups, stews, and just casual sipping. It is incredibly nutrient dense with vitamins and minerals as well as gut healing properties. If you’ve never made it in an Instant Pot definitely give it a try! Just throw all the ingredients in and set to high pressure for 90-120 minutes. The trick to making it gel is to fill it with enough water to just cover the bones and adding apple cider vinegar to help extract the nutrients from the bones. 🐔🦴
