Why do I put off for tomorrow what can be done today..!

The answer may be that you are stuck in a cycle of instant gratification, then beating your self up and then looking for more instant gratification to make it all better.

The desire to feel good now, forgetting how it will make you feel later is all too common a road to travel when it comes to addiction and over eating.

Especially for those of us that live incredibly busy or stressful lives, you don’t want to engage in more work, you just want something that feels good right now.

How many times have you started a diet on Monday only to fall apart by Thursday, how many times have you said I won’t have a drink this week or I’m going to stop va**ng only to be starting again before the week is out.

This is instant gratification, the desire to feel good right now regardless of the consequences.

And yes, maybe it does make you feel good that instant but then we are often left with thoughts of, “Why, what’s wrong with me, I’m a failure, I can’t stick to anything”.

If this resonates with you please do get in touch.

I will help you understand delayed gratification and support you whilst you become a master of this. The ability to cope with the immediate discomfort in order to feel better later.

Being able to press the pause button, being able to take a minute to ask yourself what you really want. Sounds easy, but all too many of us know this can be a tricky skill to master.

Only through changing your relationship with food or drink can you expect long term results.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result will not work as Einstein famously said, this is insanity.

Well it will slowly drive you insane and then you take it out on the one person you need to be kindest to and that’s yourself, what chance do you then have of doing something positive when you are stuck in this rut of hating on yourself.

Any diet will lead to weight regain, if you go back to doing what you did before, long term life style change is the goal and understanding your individual relationship with food will help you achieve this.

If you are looking to lose up to 3 stone by Christmas and to keep it off for good please do get in touch, high levels of support from me and you will be feeling your best self in no time.

What If...!

If you think you can’t, think again…!

Do you ever wish you could lose a bit of weight or fit into some clothes that feel like they are evading you, but you never seem to be able to get going or stay going?

Does it feel like you want it so much but just can’t keep the motivation or the focus. How many times have you started a “diet” on a Monday only to find by Thursday its all falling apart.
Things get in the way, there’s always a reason why not to do it.

Social situations, peer pressure, the joy of food, it’s just too damn hard.

But, what about all the reasons why you’d like to do it, feeling confident to enjoy social situations, confident in the workplace, at home, with friends and wearing your clothes.

Being able to have a wardrobe full of clothes that all fit you, feeling healthier, being able to walk or run around without becoming breathless. Just feeling better in yourself.

Knowing you have achieved something purely for you, knowing you have done the very thing that you have possibly been struggling with for years.

If you think you can’t do this, think again. You can do this.
You can turn those vague wishes into reality.

You just may need a little support.

Have you ever tried to lose weight with support?

If you had a loved one who was struggling with an area of their lives you would ask, what they need from you, how can you support them or can you find them support elsewhere.

But when it comes to ourselves and particularly our relationship with food we seem to think we should be able to go it alone, we know what to do to lose weight, eat less and move more, if only it were that simple.

So, if you have been trying to get this weight off and you haven’t tried doing it with support isn’t it worth giving it a go.

Isn’t it worth giving it that one try, something different, something new.

It may not work..! That much is true...! Its unlikely not to work..!

But what if it did work, what if we are talking in 3 months time and you are 3 stone lighter. What then!!

Well you will never know unless you try.

Please, reach out, try something new, contact me today to discuss how I can help you achieve your goals.

Just Saying…

3500 kcal = 1lbs Fat

So remember the next time you get on the scales and they say you’ve put on a pound, ask yourself have you eaten an extra 3500 kcal on top of your 1500-2000 plus kcal daily intake, if the answer is no then you’re just holding a little fluid.

Move on and keep going, consistency is key.

Don’t forget. The scales weigh everything, not just your fat…!

Dare to Dream..!

When I first realised I was having another baby I allowed myself to dream, I lost that little one at just 6 weeks pregnant. But even though so early into the pregnancy I still allowed myself to grieve the loss of what I thought would be.

I was, therefore, so excited when I found out I was pregnant with my little Rudy and again allowed myself to enter into the fantasy world of what it would be like.

All the things we would do as a family together. The mother I would be, the father my husband would be and the little brother he would be to his 3 awesome big sisters.

I allowed myself to daydream about the trips to London, his first words, first steps, the play dates and new friendships he and I would make at the school.

To dream about some of the things I wasn’t able to do as a single mum first time round, experiencing this with a partner, my family complete.

We all fantasised and why not, why shouldn’t we, its exciting.

Now, we know that it is highly unlikely that our children will turn out the way we expect, they have their own dreams and grow into individuals that want to explore their own avenues.

However, I do think it is unrealistic for us to think we won’t have these little fantasies and over time as we watch our children develop and grow those will change with our children.

So, when your child gets a diagnosis, often a life changing diagnosis for you and for the child you’d imagined it can come as a shock and its important we process our feelings.

My daughters haven’t been able to be the sisters they thought they would, I have had to be a very different mother and my husband has learnt how to be a father in a way he never imagined. The trips and holidays vanished, the friendships never formed and I had to allow myself to feel a sadness that wasn’t wrapped up in guilt.

Guilt because I had a truly unbelievable individual right in front of me, who I adore, that didn’t mean I wasn’t allowed to be sad for what I thought I had lost.

I am a counsellor and coach and work extensively with business and individuals with neurodiversity and SEN/d in their lives.

I support these people with coming to terms with the hand they have been dealt with a view to moving forward and finding the joy in the lives we have now.

I will be running 2 hour workshops via zoom on both Thursday 14th March at 12pm and Wednesday 27th March at 7pm This will be just ÂŁ15 for either workshop, and I will limit numbers to ensure each person gets the most out of it.

If you would like to reserve a place either on the daytime or evening session please either message me on here or email me on natalie@nataliefernando.com.

If you work for an organisation but would like the time off to attend please do not be scared to speak to your HR department or manager to request this, you will find that many employees will support you as part of the Diversity and Inclusions department, they may even fund it for you.

Testimonial.
• This is what I think is special about Natalie; as a trained counsellor who also has neurodivergent children with complex needs, she is ideally placed to offer much needed support, solace, and if wanted, advice, to parents who are struggling to come to terms with their children’s differences and the ongoing difficulties we face in raising them. I find her an extremely unique resource that all companies should make use of for her vast experience and limitless empathy for others. I’m so glad I met Natalie, and I look forward to using her services both personally and for my firm. Every parent of a neurodivergent child needs a Natalie.

Why do we do it…!

Why do we “Comfort” ourselves with things we know aren’t always good for us, is it really comfortable?

When we really ask ourselves that question, what exactly is comfortable about it..!

If we overeat we all too often feel bloated and uncomfortable after, if we drink when we promised ourselves we wouldn’t we can be left with feelings of guilt and shame.

There is nothing comfortable about these physical and overwhelming feelings.

I suppose in the first instance, that moment when we’re seeking something to take away the uncomfortable feeling, the difficult emotion that we don’t want to deal with, I suppose in that moment it’s easy to forget how we will feel long term, its easy to forget all our rational thoughts, we just want the feeling to go away, to be less, so we do it!

We eat when we said we wanted to lose weight, we drink when we said we’d take some time off, we smoke when we said we were giving up.

How do we learn to cope with delayed gratification, how do we learn to cope with the discomfort of going without at this very moment in order to feel better later.

It is possible...! It can be done...!

If you are struggling with this and would really like to learn some strategies to help you understand your relationship with food, contact me and I can work with you in various ways to help you achieve your goals.

If you don’t know where you’re going, you won’t know when you’re lost...!

The one thing I have learnt through years of counselling and coaching clients is the importance of a goal, knowing where you are heading.

In fact, the very first question I often ask clients whether counselling or coaching is what are the looking for, what do they want from these sessions?

The importance of goals when attempting any lifestyle change is key.

Whether this is weight loss, healthy eating, weight maintenance, job change, family changes.

Regardless, we need to be aiming somewhere so we can assess whether we are still on the right path and how far away we are.

I would always suggest a main goal, then I ask clients to break this down using various goal setting techniques to ensure this goal is small and achievable.

Asking yourself daily, “If I continue doing for the next week what I’ve been doing the last few days will I be closer to my goal or further away,” is always so useful.

Practise setting yourself small daily or weekly goals, it’s no different to doing a list but just one goal to aim for the week, not re-inventing the wheel but looking for one degree of change to get you a little closer to your main goal is the aim.

You cannot lose a stone unless you lose a pound first, set that as your first goal. You cannot start running 3k unless you can walk 1k, therefore start here.

So, as Lewis Carrol said in his wonderful book Alice in Wonderland, “If you don’t know where you want to go then it doesn't matter which path you take” have a direction, know your path, know when you’ve come off the path, assess if this is still the path you want to take.

Remember a goal is just that, it’s a target, something to aim for, its not set in stone, they can and frequently do move and this is ok.

Re assess if what you are going for is really what you are after, if it is then look at where you are going and take steps to get you on the right path, if it isn’t then its time to re set a new goal.

If you would like some help with goal setting, please contact me for a specific goal setting session.

What’s Your Why…?

One of the most important things to consider when trying to lose weight is to understand what is your why..!

It may seem obvious, but it’s worth taking into account where you are in your life before answering this question, which I believe is so important for long term success.

When I look back to a time I seemed to effortlessly maintain my weight I reflect on my lifestyle.

I was a single mum, having come out of an incredibly volatile relationship, I’d spent a lot of time alone with my new baby, my main objective was to maintain my body shape so I could fit into my clothes.

My why was all about being able to go out with confidence, I was single and wanted to meet someone to build a life with, I wanted to feel and look a certain way and at that period of time that came from being able to fit into my skinny jeans.

You never know the man of my dreams may come along and whisk me away to a tropical island, I needed to be bikini ready at all times, nowadays I may need a good few months to get bikini ready.

So, fast forward 10 years, I’m now re-married, having met that man, have inherited two amazing step-children, have another little one, a beautiful little boy who I had at 38 and found myself not bouncing back so easily into my skinny jeans I faced a problem that was unfamiliar to me, I had to really work at losing this weight.

So, there I was, skinny jeans in front of me and after several years of trying could not work out why I couldn’t maintain the motivation and consistency required for me to lose these stubborn pounds.

Then it dawned on me, I had never re looked at my why...?

So much had changed for me in those 10 years, my little boy was diagnosed at 2 with very complex special needs, a severe learning disability, profound autism and ADHD, not only was I using food as a “comfort” and a way to spend time to bond with my husband in what we faced, which were incredibly stressful times but also I really truly couldn’t give a damn deep down whether I could get in those skinny jeans or not.

My why had changed…!

So, for me, what does it look like now?

It’s a mother who has to live forever and some so she can take care of her vulnerable little boy.

It’s a woman who needs the strength to look after a vulnerable grown man.

It’s a mother that can enjoy her adult children and have the energy to have fun with them.

It’s a woman who can thrive in a relationship with her husband under overwhelming and sometimes exhausting circumstances.

So, now I’ve found my why and it’s all starting to make a little more sense.

I’m more inspired so motivation is a little easier and the consistency to do the same thing every day to see the results when I look around at the life I want to live is there.

And after all, as my 17-year-old daughter reminded me just the other day as I was trying to squeeze a leg into my skinny jeans, “Mum, skinny jeans just aren’t in fashion anymore” 🤷‍♀️

If you would like a little help to find your why and support in reaching your goals, this is what I do, please contact me to discuss how I may help you.
