Bowen Health

Bowen Health A holistic technique that works on the soft tissues of the body to help reduce pain & restriction It can be done through light clothing or directly on skin.

I have recently qualified in Bowen therapy which is a holistic technique that works on the soft connective tissues of the body. I also work as a paramedic in North Devon and so split my time between Bowen and the ambulance service. A Bowen treatment consists of sequences of small moves, each at a specific site on the body. Bowen works on the mechanoreceptors and soft connective tissue of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia, or soft tissue, is the part of the connective tissue that envelopes, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body. The gentle moves are performed in precise locations to gain maximal influences of the receptors of the nervous system with minimal inputs. It is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaints. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms. Treatments can last between 30 minutes to 1 hour, although extra time is given on the first treatment. It can be performed over a light layer of clothing although you will be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During the treatment the therapist may leave the room for periods of 2 to 5 minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves. What you can expect. Bowen is not necessarily an ongoing therapy. The person may experience relief after just the first session and significant resolution or recovery within 3 sessions. However, chronic or long standing conditions or repeat injury may require additional treatments and if symptoms do not resolves you should see your doctor. Many people with long term chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis (MS) find benefits from attending regular Bowen treatments as part of their continuing treatment plan. Advice following treatment. Avoid other physical therapy or forms of manipulation – such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy or acupuncture for one week after having Bowen as your body will need to adjust to the treatment. Fascia responds very differently when well-hydrated, so it is important to drink plenty of water. Walking and moving is also encouraged and avoid sitting for long periods.

When people say “the body remembers trauma”, they’re talking about how overwhelming or threatening experiences can leave lasting imprints not only in memory but also in the nervous system, muscles, hormones, and even unconscious reflexes.
Bowen can help soothe the body, allowing it to recover.
Just one of the amazing reasons to have a Bowen treatment.

The body remembers what the mind may try to forget.

Tension, fatigue, cravings, and even skin flare-ups — sometimes, these aren't just physical. They're how the body tells its story.

Bowen Therapy doesn’t force the body to “fix” anything.

Through light, purposeful touch, it supports the nervous system in settling, as best it can — not by pushing, but by inviting.

Gentle moves, deep listening.

Bowen therapy ……
For those who’ve never tried it, here’s how it goes:
• You lie down fully clothed.
• The therapist makes tiny, gentle moves on muscles or fascia.
• Then they leave you for a while because your nervous system needs time to “chat with itself.”
• Your body goes: “Wait… we can actually fix this?”
• And then it does.

It’s like a reset button for your body without the “ugh” of deep tissue or the “crack” of chiropractic.
Just a calm, relaxed, somehow-magically-better feeling afterward.

Highly recommend if you want your body to remember how awesome it’s supposed to feel.

The heart nourishes itself first so it can keep beating for the rest of the body. Maybe we, too, need to remember that caring for ourselves isn’t selfish—it’s essential. ❤️

✅ Completed Neurological Assessment Course (part one) – May 2025

I had the pleasure of completing a fabulous Neurological Assessment course in May this year, run by the knowledgeable and inspiring Jun Chow. This course has added valuable assessment tools, enhancing both my diagnostic precision and treatment effectiveness in Bowen.

Another lovely comment about the wonder of Bowen therapy… thank you KS. 👌

I completely agree, Vicky is incredibly skilled at her job 💯. I've been in pain since march and visited an osteopath without much success, but Vicky's treatment has worked wonders 🙌. I'm now almost pain free and will continue to see her every month for the relaxation benefits 😊

Bowen Therapy may help with anxiety and stress, here’s why…

🌿Bowen encourages the body to shift from a "fight or flight" state into a "rest and digest" mode. This switch promotes deep relaxation, calming the nervous system and reducing the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety.
🌿Induces Deep Relaxation. Many of my clients report entering a meditative or deeply relaxed state during and after treatment, lowering heart rate, cortisol levels, and help manage racing thoughts and emotional tension.
🌿Balances the Autonomic Nervous System helpin to re-regulate the autonomic nervous system, which often becomes imbalanced during chronic stress or anxiety.
🌿Reduces Physical Tension Related to Stress, anxiety often manifests physically—tight shoulders, headaches, stomach tension, etc.
🌿Enhances Mind-Body Awareness.
Gentle touch can increase awareness of bodily sensations, promoting a more grounded and present mental state.
This can be particularly beneficial for people who feel dissociated or overwhelmed by their anxiety.
🌿Cumulative and Long-Lasting Effects. While many feel immediate relief, the benefits of Bowen often accumulate over several sessions.
Clients often describe better coping skills, more resilience to stress, and an overall sense of well-being.

❗ Important Note
While Bowen Therapy may support emotional and physical relaxation, it is not a replacement for mental health care if someone is experiencing severe anxiety or a diagnosed anxiety disorder. It can be a complementary therapy alongside counseling, CBT, or medication.

🌿 Why I Love Working as a Bowen Therapist

I love working as a Bowen therapist because it allows me to help people heal in a gentle, holistic way. Bowen therapy doesn’t force the body—it invites it to rebalance, release, and reset. Watching those subtle shifts happen, and seeing how they translate into real relief for someone in pain or stress, never stops being rewarding.

Every client is a reminder that the body has incredible intelligence and capacity for self-healing. Bowen therapy gives me the tools to support that natural process, not override it. I love how simple yet profound it is: just a few light movements, some space, and the body does the rest.
