The MAYU popup will be at the gorgeous Creake Abbey Farmers market tomorrow with a selection of our nutritious produce - from cold pressed juices, nutritional shots, summery salads, fermented foods, organic teas, and a selection of savoury muffins, cakes and slices.

All MAYU produce is created by Pamela Taylor, Registered Nutritionist and Gut Health specialist, and expertly prepared by Kieron Abbott, MAYUs private chef, with nutrition as the firm focus. Only ever using high quality, often organic, raw ingredients, packed with healthy fats, nutrients, and protein, and never using refined sugars, the MAYU range is as nutritious as it is delicious, with many gluten free, vegetarian, vegan and low FODMAP options.

I will also have a selection of my recommended gut supplements including prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes, functional shots and fermented foods.

Find us in the barn across from the cafe.

When do you have your first cup of coffee or tea in the morning? If it’s the first thing you do on rising, you are not alone. For many, this morning ritual is a necessity to perk up and get on with the day.

This perkiness is due to caffeine increasing cortisol levels. You might be familiar with cortisol as a stress hormone, but cortisol is also the primary hormone from your adrenals that signals the body to be awake and responsive. Peaking at approx 7-8am, cortisol helps get us up and going before dipping until later in the day, then falling again with its lowest level in the evening, helping to promote sleep.

Having a cup of coffee or tea within the first hour or two of waking, increases cortisol whilst already at its peak. Therefore, by pushing your first caffeinated drink until 10 – 11am, when Cortisol levels have begun to drop, you get more of an effect, helping to keep you alert and focused.

It is also thought that early morning caffeine might negatively interfere with our normal morning cortisol production, and for anyone who is stressed and/or feels they absolutely need caffeine to get going, I would recommend trying to break this morning habit altogether.

Other factors to consider is the effect of caffeine on an empty stomach and the digestive system. Caffeine increases gastric acid production which may cause reflux in some people, it also increases gastrin and cholecystokinin which initiate involuntary muscle contractions in the digestive system, getting the bowels moving. So, if you suffer with reflux or loose bowels and are drinking coffee first thing, your caffeine intake and timing is certainly something to consider.

I recommend starting your day with a little warm water (on its own or with some ginger or lemon) or some herbal tea, helping to rehydrate. Then having your breakfast and enjoying your first coffee and tea around 10.30/11am, maximising the effect and still gaining the benefits and enjoyment.

he FODMAP diet was created by researchers at Monash University for patients with a medical IBS diagnosis, & studies illustrate that the following IBS symptoms are reduced in 3 out of 4 patients who follow the diet:

Pain and discomfort
Distention and bloating
Constipation, and diarrhoea
With improved quality of life scoring. It is now widely the first intervention of choice for IBS.

The FODMAP diet can sound rather complicated but really, FODMAP’s are basically just sugars that aren’t properly digested or absorbed in the gut, triggering symptoms in some people with IBS. The low FODMAP diet is just that, a diet that reduces the intake of these sugars to alleviate symptoms & help identify what FODMAPs are the main symptom triggers. However, FODMAPs are in many foods, including many fruits, vegetables and whole foods so this diet must be undertaken with some planning to ensure nutritional requirements are met, preferably under the care of a qualified practitioner. This is particularly important if your diet is already restricted in any way – allergies, vegan, etc.

This diet is recommended by many GPs however due to a lack of dietetic resources, very few people get the one-on-one support required to successfully follow a period of low FODMAP diet – these are often the people that I see in clinic. Most have struggled with IBS for many years, have tired various dietary and medical interventions and most are still struggling, sometimes daily.

I completed the FODMAP training for professionals with Monash University to enable me to help my IBS clients. I use this in conjunction with a functional medicine approach to identify and address any other underlying issues that may be contributing, functional testing where appropriate, and other nutritional interventions such as a low FODMAP fibre supplement, specific probiotic strains, and supplementary nutrients to address specific IBS symptoms, alongside lifestyle modifications.

If you struggle with IBS or need guidance following a prescribed FODMAP diet, please get in touch to organise a personalised nutrition consultation or to arrange a telephone call to discuss how I may be able to help.
