Kennel cough, or infectious tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs causing a harsh, hacking cough, often sounding like something is stuck in their throat, and can be accompanied by sneezing or discharge, typically resolving in 1-3 weeks with rest and supportive care, though severe cases in puppies, seniors, or immunocompromised dogs need vet care, as complications like pneumonia can occur. It spreads through airborne particles or contaminated surfaces in places like kennels, parks, and daycares, and vaccination is available to reduce risk.
Causes & Transmission
Caused by various viruses (like parainfluenza, adenovirus) and bacteria (especially Bordetella bronchiseptica).
Spreads easily via close contact, coughing, shared water bowls, or contaminated objects.
Common in boarding facilities, dog parks, groomers, and vet clinics.
Symptoms
Classic Cough: Dry, hacking, honking cough, sometimes followed by gagging or mucus.
Other Signs: Sneezing, runny nose/eyes, lethargy, fever, reduced appetite (in more severe cases).
Worsening Signs (See Vet): Wet cough, significant lethargy, difficulty breathing, green/yellow discharge.
Treatment & Home Care
Mild Cases: Rest, plenty of water, humidifier, light exercise, and using a harness (not a collar) to reduce throat irritation.
Severe Cases: Vet may prescribe antibiotics for secondary infections, anti-inflammatories, or cough suppressants.
Isolation: Keep sick dogs away from others for at least two weeks after symptoms disappear to prevent spread.
Prevention
Vaccination is available (injectable, intranasal, oral) and reduces severity.
Avoid high-risk areas if your dog isn't vaccinated or has underlying health issues.
