People new to EFT are often struck by what they refer to as “focusing on the negative” and can sometimes be worried about it. Haven’t we all been taught that dwelling on upsetting thoughts or emotions can be harmful?
Yes and no. It is true that ruminating on negative thoughts can create feedback loops that end up increasing our negative ruminations and it’s also true that the advice to think positively instead is valuable because of this.
So, when we first try EFT and are asked to identify the problem rather than the solution, it can feel strange, counterintuitive, or even scary. Doing this doesn’t make the problem worse, however. All we are doing is bringing what we want to work on out of the shadows and into the light of our awareness so that we can aim our tapping at it.
Another way to think of it is this: we are not tapping on “the negative” so much as we are tapping on “the truth.” You’ve already got the feelings, the thoughts, the memories, and now you are just acknowledging them which is the first step in resolving, clearing, collapsing, or processing them with EFT.
