🩷 A truly inspirational Lady and one of our own here at Hinchloss. 🩷
Worth taking your time to read her story!
“The lump was right behind my ni**le so I couldn’t feel it.
“The doctor said he wouldn’t have been able to feel it, so the mammogram was an absolute lifesaver as far as I’m concerned.
“I’ve been attending mammograms since I turned 50. I did have 1 recall but that was just some calcification. So, when I was called back this time, I was quite blasé about it.
“My husband was going to come with me, but I said not to bother, it’s a waste of time if I’m just going to be told it’s calcification again. So, it was a bit of a shock. They did the biopsy straight away.
“I knew when they did the biopsy that it was breast cancer, but I had to wait 10 days for it to be confirmed. That was quite a long 10 days, it was quite hard on us all.
“Fortunately, the lump was fairly small, and the mammogram having caught it early saved me from having to have a mastectomy.
“I had 5 days of radiotherapy for 3 weeks, but I was also fortunate that I didn’t have to have chemo.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m a huge fan of mammograms. I say it to all my friends, check your b***s. I’m in the rotary and I say it to the men as well as the women.
“After treatment I decided I needed a challenge and climbed the 100 highest mountain peaks in Wales, writing a book about my challenge. All proceeds going to Breast Cancer Now.
“It was brilliant, it strengthened me. I’m passionate about exercise and walking yourself well. I know it’s not for everyone and not everyone is well enough to do it. But even if you can just walk around the block, it all helps.” - Sheila
Routine screening caught Shelia’s breast cancer early, before she could feel a lump.
