The Hidden Costs of Ignoring your Childhood Trauma...

In my practice, we understand the profound impact that unresolved childhood trauma can have on your life. And while the journey to healing may seem daunting, the cost of not addressing these deep-seated issues can be far greater. Here’s what's at risk if you don't resolve and heal your childhood trauma.

Mental and Emotional Well-being
Issues such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, can severely diminish your quality of life, leaving you feeling stuck and hopeless. Without help, you may continue to struggle with low self-esteem and self-worth, leading to a negative self-image that affects all areas of your life.

Physical Health
The stress from untreated trauma can take a toll on your physical health. Chronic pain, cardiovascular problems and a weakened immune system are common among those who haven’t addressed their past traumas. Sleep disturbances and fatigue can add to these issues, making everyday tasks feel overwhelming.

Relationships
The inability to trust others, fear of abandonment, hyper independence and difficulties with intimacy can lead to strained relationships and isolation. There was a time that if you asked me if I had anxiety, I would have answered no...

Not because I didn’t have anxiety, but because I’ve had it all of my life so it was my normal, it was a baseline for me.

Also known as high functioning anxiety, you can function with quite high levels of stress in your body and only when your system gets completely overwhelmed does it then become a problem.

Things like depression, insomnia, control issues, skin biting, procrastination and imposter syndrome show up.

There’s a very good reason for this and its one of the things I’ll be talking about in my upcoming free masterclass.

He may have been a spy in a previous life…

He always heads for higher ground, he likes to see what’s going on. Who is encroaching on his territory, ie people walking past the house and talking… how very dare they!

Even in the car he opts for sitting on the console between the seats so he can see where we are going.

He is constantly on guard, on high alert, hyper vigilant even.

Watching for threats or things to be worried about, he takes his work very seriously.

Kind of like my clients who experience high functioning anxiety.

If you do too, you may know how this feels.

😱 The constant worrying about what might happen, working out all the possibilities.

😱 The interrupted sleep, tossing and turning as you replay events from your day, rehearsing what you coulda shoulda said or done differently, waking exhausted.

😱 The striving and pushing yourself to extremes to prove yourself and your worthiness, fearing you will be found out to be an imposter.

😱 The stressed and overwhelmed system and you flip between feeling numb and feeling over sensitive to others comments and motives.

😱 The brain fog and lack of focus, struggling to make decisions, procrastination and the inability to take the action you know you need to take, making you feel useless.

The good news is (yes there is good news 🙂) Just like my clients you can find peace.

You can regulate your nervous system, get better sleep, be clear, focussed, efficient and productive, reclaiming up to 40% of your time back (yes really)

When your anxiety has been present for as long as you remember… all the way back to childhood sometimes.

You’ve probably developed a tolerance for anxiety, so much so you carry on regardless, it’s what we call functional anxiety.

You push through all of the things you need to do and by the end of the day you’re exhausted and only have energy for wine o clock and Netflix.

what you don’t see is the impact on your body and your nervous system, eventually it all comes to a head as your system becomes overloaded and overwhelmed and you may be on the verge of burnout.

You begin to avoid unnecessary outings preferring to stay home, the world can feel too peopley and a little too much, your world starts to become smaller as you avoid the perceived pressures.

Or maybe you turn to overworking, overeating, drinking, shopping or doom scrolling to not feel the overwhelm, the emotions, numbing yourself and shutting down, getting to the point where you can’t remember the last time you felt joy.

Most feel like this is something that the just have to put up with or Medicare, but that’s not true.

It is possible to get to the root cause of the anxiety, stress and overwhelm and have peace and calm, to heal your nervous system, to feel joy and happiness again.

When is the best time to sort out your anxiety?

The well known answer is yesterday…

But I would suggest its the time when the anxiety begins impacting you and your life negatively - stress , overwhelm, insomnia, brain fog, control issues, ocd, self doubt and negative self talk, worry.

🔥 The next best time is NOW!

🆘 Very often we wait and wait for the convenient time, the right time, when things at work slow down, when the kids are back at school, when life calms down and there’s more time, more money.

The truth is that there is never a good time or even a convenient time, there will always be a choice for you to make.

🔥 An opportunity to make yourself a priority, to choose you, to put yourself first for a change, a chance to eliminate your anxiety, to heal and then to thrive, if only you could take that leap of faith…

🆘 And sometimes we believe that anxiety is something we just have to put up with, to medicate, to live with and manage, especially if it runs in the family.

If you are a driven and ambitious woman and you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted, then you may be stuck in the cycle of doom, gloom and self sabotage…

If you’re stuck here you likely have:

🆘 A mind that goes round and round, worrying about all of the negative what ifs, replaying events and conversations from the last few days, rehearsing what you could have, would have, should have said or done differently, stopping you from getting a good nights sleep.

🆘 Wasted precious time doubting and second guessing yourself, procrastinating feeling stuck and unable to take action, leaving you feeling like an imposter, lazy and useless (you’re not)

🆘 Ongoing negative, critical and harsh self talk, beating yourself up for perceived faults or failures. Calling yourself names like “stupid” or “idiot” things that if you heard them being said to your friend, you wouldn’t allow it.

🆘 Set impossibly high standards for yourself that you inevitably dont meet and it the serves as proof that you are not “good enough“ “smart enough” or “successful enough” leaving you disappointed and disheartened.

So in the vein of “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”

So Round 2

As a reformed perfectionist , I remember well the days where I pushed myself relentlessly to be perfect, to be better.

Working harder and longer, just to prove myself worthy, good enough, that I belong…

I had a fear of rejection, of not being liked

And those of you who are also perfectionists too, will understand the anxiety and stress that goes hand in hand with that.

This striving for perfection was a direct result of the beliefs I had about myself, beliefs that I wasn’t good enough, that I needed to do something to be liked.

So whats the solution?

For me I learned to separate what I do vs what and who I am and the need for external validation for either.

I learned that I was good enough just by being me

I know, its a radical thought and as simple as it sounds it’s not easy to embody 🙂

Perfectionism isn't just a high standard; it's the relentless pursuit of flawlessness that can and does lead to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Constantly striving for unattainable ideals can chip away at our self-esteem and leave us feeling overwhelmed and inadequate.

In our personal lives, perfectionism can create unrealistic expectations and strained relationships or no relationship as no one is quite good enough. Can you FIX ME?

This is a question I get a lot when chatting to new and prospective clients.

There tends to be shame attached to these secret feelings of being broken, that there is something inherently wrong with them.

Particularly as they are CEO’s, business owners, driven and high achieving entrepreneurs and there are expectations that they must have their sh%t together.

Like being human is not allowed, that they must know everything and be able to fix everything even if its not in their realm of experience.

Like anything less would mean they are weak, incapable, a failure even 😱

My answer to the question is always, YOU ARE NOT BROKEN… although I do honour that that is how they feel sometimes…

But there are beliefs and behaviours that are created as a result of iur experiences in childhood, that make us feel that we are not good enough, that love and acceptance is conditional.

And as a result we can be:

🔹 Anxious
🔹 Perfectionists
🔹 Procrastinaters
🔹 Control freaks
🔹 People pleasers
🔹 Our own worst critics

All of the ways we sabotage ourselves in life, relationships, work or in our businesses.

But they are just beliefs and if you are ready for change we can transform those beliefs, heal the childhood trauma or narcissist abuse.

So you can rediscover your confidence, self worth and find the peace, freedom, happiness and success you’ve been wanting for so long.
