💤 Sleeping Posture: Do’s & Don’ts for a Healthy Spine 🛏️
Struggling with morning back or neck pain? Your sleeping posture could be the culprit!

❌ DON’Ts:

🚫 Sleeping on your stomach — puts stress on the neck and spine
🚫 Using too many pillows — can strain your neck
🚫 A sagging mattress — throws your spine out of alignment

✅ DO’s:

✅ Sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees to support the lower back
✅ Or sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees to align your hips
✅ Use a pillow that keeps your neck neutral — not too high, not too flat

🛏️ Pro Tip: A medium-firm mattress and a supportive pillow can make all the difference in how you feel when you wake up.

1. Sit or stand tall

Did you know the wrong footwear can lead to back pain, poor posture, and joint stress?

🛑 Flat, unsupportive shoes (yes, even flip-flops and some sneakers!) can throw off your body's alignment — starting from your feet and traveling up your knees, hips, and spine.

Supportive footwear helps:

What inspired you to become a chiropractor?
Austin suffered an injury when he was younger while playing sport, he tried lots of different therapies but chiropractic was the one that worked for him. He decided then, that helping people was what he wanted to do and chiropractic was a great way of doing it.🙌

What’s your go-to comfort food or favourite dish to cook?
Austin makes a mean chilli con carne- even if he does say so himself.🫘🫕

Lifting: Expert Tips to Make It Easier and Avoid Strain

1. Set your position: Face the direction in which you want to carry the weight. Always lift using a relaxed, straight back. Avoid twisting through your back when moving an item to one side – instead pivot and twist through your hips and ankles↗️
2. Use more of your muscles: Avoid only bending from the waist (keeping your knees straight). Bend your knees, hips, and back to distribute the load across many muscles, this makes lifting so much easier.💪
3. Maintain a broad base: Try and lift with a ‘broad base’ when in a squat position or lunge position; this will make you more stable.👣
4. Keep items close to you: Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.📦
5. Balance the weight: Make sure you balance or secure the weight before you start moving⚖️
6. Take your time: Take short breaks to rest your muscles by placing the items back down⏱️

At Your Destination🏖🌴☀️️

Once you arrive at your holiday spot, here are a few practical adjustments which can make your stay more enjoyable.

1. Go for a walk🚶🚶‍♀️ – Travelling to destinations often involves a lot of sitting around, which tends to stiffen our muscles and joints. Once you arrive at your destination go for a short walk to loosen off and explore the area.

2. Bed down 🛏️ – When you get to your hotel, if your bed is too hard ask the hotel staff for a spare duvet or blanket to put between you and the mattress.

3. Lounging around 💆 – If you’re heading to the sun loungers in search of the perfect tan, try not to lie on your tummy with your back and neck arched back when reading your book or magazine for long periods. Put the reading matter on the floor, so that you can view it over the edge of the sun bed; this keeps your neck and body in a more neutral position!

4. Exercise in safety 🏊🏋️‍♂️– If keeping in shape is on your holiday agenda, ensure you have a full induction to the hotel gym equipment. If you’ve been sitting a lot as part of the journey to your hotel, keep your initial workout lighter than usual to avoid injury.
