Repost from using - Frustrated to see WW’s new campaign targeting teens. So many of my clients have memories of their restrictive and shame-based relationship with food and body beginning with going to WW or being put on a diet or being made to feel their body was too big.
No, eating disorders are not the *fault* of parents. Parents are generally doing the best they know how with what they have accessible and with what they’ve been taught. Which is why we need to let more parents know that the best way to support their children’s health, wellbeing, self esteem, etc is by affirming them. NOT seeking to change or shrink them. Some good sense here.

2020 was hard for a multitude of reasons. The insidious one was how weight stigma became popular again as BMI correlations (not causations) were used to justify discrimination. As a result, the cyclical new year weight loss advertising have even more emotional manipulation than usual. Don’t fall for them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want your new year resolution to include improving your health, that’s great! However, the least reliable way of doing that is by trying to deliberately manipulate your weight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Focus on the other things that are actually reliable indicators... better sleep, reducing alcohol, getting more fruit and veg, regular exercise... all of those are guaranteed to improve your health, irrelevant of what happens to the number on the scales. No word of a lie.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Losing weight is not your life’s purpose, no matter how aggressively diet culture tells you it is. Save this post and remind yourself of it daily. Send it to a friend. Make it your wallpaper. Don’t let anyone dissuade you of its truth and importance.
