Cracked Heels and Diabetes
Heel fissures, or cracked heels, can be a painful condition characterized by deep cracks or splits in the skin of the heel .
These fissures can result from dry and hard skin, prolonged standing, increased weight, wearing the wrong footwear such as open, among other factors.
For people with diabetes, the risk is particularly concerning. Diabetes can impair circulation and nerve function, reducing the skin’s ability to heal properly and increasing the likelihood of complications from cracks.
When heel fissures occur, they can widen over time, potentially leading to infections or more serious foot problems, commonly seen in diabetic patients. It's crucial for those with diabetes to monitor their feet regularly, moisturize daily, and seek medical advice if they notice any cracks or changes in their skin. Preventative care and early intervention can help maintain foot health and reduce the risk of complications associated with heel fissures.
