Cracked Heels and Diabetes

Heel fissures, or cracked heels, can be a painful condition characterized by deep cracks or splits in the skin of the heel .

These fissures can result from dry and hard skin, prolonged standing, increased weight, wearing the wrong footwear such as open, among other factors.

For people with diabetes, the risk is particularly concerning. Diabetes can impair circulation and nerve function, reducing the skin’s ability to heal properly and increasing the likelihood of complications from cracks.

When heel fissures occur, they can widen over time, potentially leading to infections or more serious foot problems, commonly seen in diabetic patients. It's crucial for those with diabetes to monitor their feet regularly, moisturize daily, and seek medical advice if they notice any cracks or changes in their skin. Preventative care and early intervention can help maintain foot health and reduce the risk of complications associated with heel fissures.

Routine Foot Care Appointment ☝️

Let’s look at these two examples showing hammer toes with corns, thickened toenails and calluses on the ball of the feet 👣

Corns and calluses are common foot ailments that often develop on areas like hammer toes and the ball of the feet due to excessive pressure and friction.

Hammer Toes

This condition occurs when one or more toes bend downward at the middle joint, causing pressure on the toe, especially when wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. As a result, corns can form on the tops or sides of the affected toes, leading to pain and discomfort.

The ball of the foot, which supports much of our body weight, can also experience the formation of calluses due to repetitive pressure from walking or standing. Calluses are thickened areas of skin that develop as a protective response to friction but can become uncomfortable and painful if they grow too thick.

➡️ To manage corns and calluses, consider wearing properly fitting footwear that offers ample space for your toes and reduces pressure on the ball of your foot.

Understanding Corns Under Toenails

Corns under toenails can be a painful and bothersome condition.

What’s the cause for a corn to develop under the toenail ?💡
Corns typically develop due to repeated friction or pressure on the toes, often intensified by ill-fitting footwear. When the skin around the toenails sustains constant irritation—like from tight shoes or toe deformities (such as hammertoes or bunions)—the body responds by thickening the skin, resulting in corns.

😩
Corns can cause significant discomfort. They may feel hard and raised, leading to pain when pressure is applied, particularly while walking or wearing shoes. In some cases, corns can also become inflamed and infected if not properly cared for.

Prevention
Preventing corns is largely about footwear choices and foot care:

Choose Proper Footwear ‼️
Opt for shoes that fit well, providing enough room for your toes without constriction.

Treatment
See a qualified Foot Health Professional for treatment/ removal of the corn and talk about preventative options available.

My favourite home treatment (also great for ingrowing toenails)

-Gehwol Fluid softens nails and makes them more flexible, helping to prevent them from growing inward
-Softens hard skin beneath the nail and in the nail fold, so that it can be easily removed without pain

Let’s talk about callus formation and corns 🤓👣

Calluses and corns are thickened patches of skin that develop on the bottom of the feet as a protective response to repeated friction or pressure. While they often serve as natural shields, they can become uncomfortable or painful if left untreated.

What’s causing corns and calluses to form?

- Friction from ill-fitting shoes
- Repetitive activities like walking or running
- Abnormal or altered gait
- Standing for long periods
- Excessive weight or pressure on certain areas of the feet

Difference between calluses and corns:

Calluses are larger, broader areas of thickened skin whereas corns are smaller, central, and often have a hard core that can be painful

Home Care Tips 😃💡

1. Soften the skin: Soak your feet in warm water with salt or Epsom salts for 10-15 minutes to soften the calluses and corns.

2. Gentle exfoliation: Use a pumice stone or a foot file to carefully remove dead skin BUT do avoid over-scraping!!

3. Moisturize: Apply a thick cream/ emollient or lotion containing urea, salicylic acid, or lactic acid daily to keep skin soft.

4. Wear proper footwear: Choose well-fitting shoes that provide adequate support and reduce pressure.
