Coming back after my pause to assess the impact of GLP-1 meds, I have some very clear conclusions…
1. Many patients have good initial success but don’t want to be continuously injecting for life
2. Surgical patients tend to lose more weight so a combination of surgery and meds is likely needed for those over bmi 50
3. Complication rates from surgery are very low and it remains , in expert hands, a procedure where the risks are outweighed by the medical and psychological benefits
4. Medications are ideal for post op regain to get back on track
5. Patients who take meds primarily with no multidisciplinary team looking after their dietetics and mental health, run a huge risk of malnutrition and muscle loss. Many patients forget to eat and feel safe to continue to eat ultra processed foods
6. Medications should be a first port of call for some- if success occurs then likely they will do well with surgery. Poor results with meds may mean poor results with surgery.
Main conclusion- they are not mutually exclusive. Surgery and meds can work in harmony and are both excellent tools to manage the disease of obesity. #
