We go to therapy, usually, to try to make things better. For life, in some way, to improve. To relieve suffering and increase positivity, pleasure, satisfaction, joy in life.

But what if by doing so it causes the opposite – increased terror, increased distress, increased confusion and inner conflict?

That's exactly what can happen after , as our back brains desperately try to keep us safe and maintain the status quo.

Being an adult sibling to an autistic person can bring a whole range of experiences, feelings and complexity to your life that it can be hard for others to relate to. Connecting with others who just ‘get’ what sibling life is like can help you to feel more confident and less isolated in your sibling role. Good morning everyone and happy Tuesday!

Remember this, you have the power of choice! At anytime, you can choose to live your life differently than you have been living. Each day presents you with a clean slate, and fresh choices. You can continue on with the same old same old, or you can begin to make different choices for yourself. It doesn’t have to be big choices and big changes, those tiny little changes you make have a ripple effect in your life. Peace CAN be created by YOU!!

If taught me one thing, it was that everything was 'my fault'. It was the only way to survive psychologically – by taking the blame, by being the bad one, the world made sense and what was happening to me made sense.

Of course it was NEVER my fault, but I internalised that blame and continued, for decades after the original abuse, to blame myself and berate myself and hate myself for anything and everything.

That constant self-criticism was a symptom of trauma as much as the flashbacks or dysregulation were. And so I had to learn to give myself a break, and not beat myself up quite so incessantly. Easier said than done – it took a LOT of work to unlearn those survival patterns of childhood – but it was instrumental in my healing and recovery.

Sometimes it’s tough to say what you’re really feeling, especially when it feels like everyone else is celebrating at this time of year. Please just know that with our volunteers, you can be completely honest, even if you’re struggling with thoughts about giving up or feeling like things won’t get better. They’re here to listen without judgement and talk through whatever you’re facing. You don’t have to carry it on your own – call 116 123.
