🦋 Lymphedema Awareness Month – Day #13
Lymphedema Can Affect Many Parts of the Body — Inside and Out
Many people believe lymphedema only affects the arms or legs. In reality, the lymphatic system runs throughout the entire body, meaning lymphatic dysfunction can affect many different areas both externally and internally.
🩵External areas that may be affected:
• Feet and toes (swelling, tight skin, aching, difficulty fitting into shoes)
• Ankles (fluid buildup, stiffness, visible swelling around joints)
• Legs (heaviness, swelling, pain, fatigue when walking)
• Knees (tightness, swelling around the joint, reduced mobility)
• Thighs (heaviness, skin tightness, pressure)
• Hips (pressure, swelling, discomfort when sitting)
• Hands and fingers (puffiness, stiffness, rings becoming tight)
• Wrists (swelling, pressure, reduced flexibility)
• Arms (heaviness, aching, reduced range of motion)
• Shoulders (tightness, pressure, aching)
• Chest and breasts (swelling, heaviness, tenderness, tight skin)
• Back (fluid pockets, aching, pressure)
• Sides of the torso / ribs (swelling, tenderness, tight clothing feeling uncomfortable)
• Abdomen / stomach area (bloating, firmness, pressure)
• Buttocks (swelling, pressure when sitting)
• Ge***al area (swelling, heaviness, discomfort, difficulty with clothing)
• Neck (tightness, swelling, stiffness)
• Jaw area (pressure, facial tightness)
• Face (facial swelling, puffiness, pressure)
• Eyelids (puffiness, heaviness)
• Eyes / eye area (pressure behind the eyes, blurry vision, eye fatigue, light sensitivity)
• Scalp (tenderness, swelling, tight skin feeling)
🩵Internal areas that may be affected through lymphatic or fluid drainage pathways:
• Sinuses (pressure, congestion, sinus headaches)
• Brain drainage pathways (head pressure, headaches, brain fog)
• Spinal fluid pathways (neck pressure, spinal stiffness, nerve irritation)
• Chest cavity / lungs (tightness, pressure, difficulty taking deep breaths)
• Digestive system (abdominal pressure, bloating, discomfort after eating)
• Pelvic region (pressure, fullness, discomfort)
• Lymph nodes and lymph vessels throughout the body (inflammation, tenderness, fluid congestion)
🩵Lymphedema is not just swelling. Many people living with it experience:
• Pain
• Pressure
• Heaviness
• Skin tightness
• Inflammation
• Fatigue in affected areas
And something that needs to be said more often — lymphedema can absolutely be painful, even though that fact is often overlooked. ( I will reiterate that for myself and my members. It’s for friends, family and sometimes medical professionals to believe that “just swelling “ could possibly hurt)
🩵Because the lymphatic system touches nearly every part of the body, symptoms can appear in places many people never realize are connected.
Awareness helps people understand that lymphedema is far more complex than most realize.
The more people learn about this condition, the more understanding, compassion, and proper support those living with lymphedema can receive. 🩵🦋
