💚🐾 Mardi! 🐾💚

Turns out Mardi wasn’t grumpy… he just had toothache. 🦷

Meet Mardi, an incredible 18-year-old gentleman. Dental x-rays showed multiple feline resorptive lesions – a common but painful condition where teeth slowly break down and cause significant discomfort.

To keep him comfortable, we removed 8 affected teeth.

The result?
💚 Brighter
💚 Eating better
💚 Much happier

Cats are very good at hiding dental pain, so regular dental checks – especially for our senior pets – are so important.

Amazing recovery, Mardi! 💚

🦷 Harry saved his best tooth for last! 💚

Today we carried out a dental on Harry, a lovely 14-year-old Border Terrier, who had 35 teeth removed due to advanced dental disease. He now proudly keeps one remaining canine — and most importantly, a much more comfortable mouth 💚

Harry was our final dental of Pet Smile Month, but even though the month is ending, we want to remind clients that our dental prices remain very competitive all year round — because good dental care shouldn’t only be available for one month.

Here’s to healthier mouths 💚

💚 Dental Care Saves Jaws – Meet Candy 💚

This is Candy, an 8.5-year-old Shih Tzu who recently visited us for a dental procedure.

During her treatment, 24 teeth were carefully removed due to advanced dental disease. Candy coped brilliantly and is now much more comfortable 💚

🦷 Why dental X-rays matter:

Her dental X-rays showed significant bone loss around the teeth, which isn’t always visible during a routine mouth check. In small breeds, this degree of bone loss can increase the risk of jaw fracture, so knowing this in advance allows us to plan surgery carefully and safely.

Thanks to thorough imaging and gentle technique, Candy’s procedure went smoothly and her jaw remains intact and stable.

If your dog has bad breath, loose teeth, or hasn’t had a dental check recently, a dental exam (and X-rays) can make a huge difference 🐾

🦷 Pet Smile Month 🦷

Meet Cassie, a lovely 6½-year-old Cavapoo who recently came in for a dental procedure and had 7 teeth extracted.

Cassie had already been in earlier this month for her spay, which turned out to be more complex than expected, so we made the decision to stage her dental separately. This allowed her time to recover properly and helped us keep each procedure as safe and comfortable as possible.

Dental disease can be present even when pets are still eating well, and extractions are sometimes the kindest option to remove pain and infection and improve long-term comfort.

Cassie is now recovering well and on her way to a healthier, happier smile 💚

If you have any concerns about your pet’s teeth or gums, Pet Smile Month is the perfect time to get them checked.

🐾 Pet Health Spotlight 🐾

Meet Marley, a handsome 14-year-old Maine C**n cross, owned by our receptionist Lesley, who brought him in after noticing persistent sneezing.

Blood tests showed Marley is hyperthyroid, a common condition in older cats. While sneezing is often due to separate issues such as rhinitis, dental disease, or nasal inflammation, hyperthyroidism can sometimes contribute indirectly.

An overactive thyroid can:
• Increase blood flow to tissues, including the nasal passages
• Cause low-grade inflammation or make existing problems more noticeable
• Reduce immune resilience, allowing underlying conditions to flare up

So while the sneezing may still prove to be a separate issue, identifying and treating the hyperthyroidism is an important step in helping Marley feel more comfortable overall.

This is a great reminder that subtle signs in older pets can sometimes point to wider health changes, and early testing can make a real difference 💚

🦷 Pet Smile Month – Julien’s Dental Story 🦷

Meet Julien, an 11-year-old Chinese Crested, who recently had a dental procedure with us, including 8 teeth removed – all four canines.

Dental X-rays showed significant bone loss around the lower canine teeth, which can’t be fully appreciated just by looking in the mouth.

Julien also has mitral valve disease, so his anaesthetic was carefully planned and monitored to keep him as safe as possible — age and heart disease don’t automatically rule out dentistry when it’s done thoughtfully.

He’s now recovering well and will be much more comfortable going forward 💚

🐾 Meet Blackie 💚 🐾

Blackie is a lovely 16-year-old cat who recently came to see us for dental treatment. On the dental X-ray (see image 👀), the green-circled canine tooth looked quite normal above the gum line — but underneath, the root had actually been slowly dissolving and fusing with the jawbone.

This is a very common (and painful) condition in cats called tooth resorption. It often can’t be seen just by looking in the mouth, which is why dental X-rays are so important. Blackie needed multiple extractions to keep her comfortable and pain-free 💚

🦷 Pet Smile Month – January 🦷

🐾 Following the recent BBC Panorama programme, we want to reassure our clients: we are proudly independent and vet-owned 💚

Our practices are owned and led by experienced vets, not external shareholders, private equity or venture capital. That means clinical decisions are led by vets, not financial targets. Our vets still work in clinics every day, caring for patients, supporting clients and leading teams on the ground 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

As vet owners, we’re personally accountable to the RCVS for clinical standards and patient care and that accountability matters deeply to us.

As a larger independent group, we believe this gives the best of both worlds:
🕒 24-hour care, including inpatient hospitalisation
🏥 Advanced care and imaging, including CT & MRI
💷 Fair, transparent pricing, without shareholder pressure
❤️ Decisions guided by what’s right for your pet

🔍 Our commitment:
✅ Clear estimates & transparent pricing
✅ Open conversations about options and costs
✅ Written prescriptions on request
✅ Experienced, compassionate vets and nurses
✅ Care before profit - always

We were set up as a genuine alternative to large corporate providers, combining true independence with the ability to invest in people, equipment and services for our communities.

We’re only human and always striving to do our best. Thank you for your continued kindness, trust and support 🤍

🐾 Meet Frazzle 🐾

Frazzle is a 7½-year-old Border Terrier who recently had a spay and a big dental procedure, with 17 teeth removed.

We carefully considered whether to combine the procedures, as there’s traditionally been concern about bacterial spread during dentals.

However, recent evidence suggests this risk is often exaggerated, and dual procedures can be considered for the right patient.

Frazzle did brilliantly and is already feeling much more comfortable 💚

🦷✨ It’s still Pet Smile Month this January, with 15% off dental procedures, so now is a great time to book a dental check for your pet!

Well done, Frazzle! 🐶

🐾 Meet Juke 🐾
Juke is a 6-year-old male Rottweiler who came to see us because he was sore on his right front leg.

After examining him and taking X-rays, we found that Juke is suffering from elbow dysplasia with arthritis — a common condition in large-breed dogs.

🦴 What is elbow dysplasia?
Elbow dysplasia is a developmental condition where the elbow joint doesn’t form perfectly as a dog grows. Over time, this leads to wear and tear (arthritis) and joint pain — often in both elbows, even if one leg looks worse.

📸 What do the X-rays show?

On Juke’s X-rays, we’ve circled a few important areas:

🔵 Osteophytes (extra bone that forms around the joint) — these are the body’s response to long-term joint instability

🟣 Subtrochlear sclerosis — an area of denser bone inside the joint that tells us this problem has been there for a long time

These changes don’t happen overnight — they build up gradually and explain why dogs like Juke can suddenly seem much more uncomfortable.

💚The good news
While elbow dysplasia can’t be cured, it can be managed very successfully. Treatment focuses on:

Pain relief
Weight management
Exercise modification
Long-term joint care (sometimes including monthly injections like Librela)
With the right plan, dogs like Juke can stay comfortable, active, and happy for many years.

🐶 Big dogs, big joints, big hearts — and sometimes joints that need a bit of extra support.

If your dog is slowing down, stiff after rest, or reluctant on walks, it’s always worth getting them checked 💚
