Our vagus nerve is the largest nerve in the body and acts as a counterbalance to our fight or flight system. It is the main nerve of our parasympathetic nervous system - our rest and digest mode.
The name āvagusā comes from the Latin term for āwanderingā and this is because this nerve wanders from the brain into the organs in the neck, chest and abdomen. It allows the brain to monitor and receive information about our bodily function such as our heart rate, digestion and immune system.
By stimulating the vagus nerve you can send a message to your body that itās time to relax and destress which leads to long-term improvements in mood, wellbeing and can also help overcome anxiety and depression.
Breathwork along with cold showers, yoga, meditation and humming are some of the ways you can stimulate the healthy function of the vagus nerve.
