…and here we find a Nutritionist in her natural habitat

September has had a cracking start 🌞 and it’s been so great to see so many of you taking hold of that ‘back to school’ feeling to start new routines or pick up where you left off before summer hit. Crunch time comes after the initial motivation wanes - so here’s my tips

- aim for the ‘daily-ish’: when you can do your meditation/heathy breakfast/dose of nature/ movement daily, great! Celebrate. When it doesn’t happen, let it go and try again on the next opportunity. Don’t think “f**k it I’ll start again on Monday / next month”
- make small changes, then make them stick. This is a marathon, not a sprint so make changes that you can sustain over a long period of time / not just a month.
- Measure what matters. Forget the number on the scales or calories to count. Track instead patterns and improvements such as how well you are sleeping, how many meals that day were made with balance, how you feel in your body, track your energy levels, your digestion, your strength, your resilience, how many recipes you can cook from scratch…
-make changes based on how much you love yourself NOT on what needs ‘fixing’

Keep going, you’ve totally got this ✌️

A day off for us

A holiday ‘day off’ spent doing the extraordinary ordinary.

A country walk over hills and through woods.

Time to chat just me and you (without the discussion of nap times and putting the washing on and ‘have we thought of lunch’)

Delicious food and wonderful company & settings with margaritas and a nice loo.

Lucky, happy me x

Apparently today is which is ironic (or maybe not?) because I’ve felt MEGA stressed today. Factors I won’t go into as these micro stresses many of us experience (toddler with a cold, nursery pick ups, workload, house load, bad nights sleep - you know the drill)

First of all - I’m always in awe with how much women have the capacity to take on (we are awesome - go ladies) but also it’s important we have tools in our kit to fall back on when those pressures build, the constant in-head todo list gets too much or maybe we haven’t been checking in on ourselves enough.

I will say - I also think the idea of ‘self care’ is over simplistic. I truly believe that we are social beings and therefore yes, we need to take care of ourselves but also we need others to look out for us too - to check in, lend and ear or a hand. Lucky for me today I had a good mate on hand with a ‘can I do anything to help?’ and a top teammate who noticed my stress levels and sent me off with the order to do an SOS mediation and get into the bath. This is the meditation I chose and it worked a charm Thankyou very much.

So here it is for you too - I first of all hope you don’t need an SOS meditation, but if you ever do - save it, use it (and share it - as we all need a helping hand sometimes)

Mango, Turmeric + Ginger Chia Pud!

Many of you asked for this recipe and I’m so pleased to share it because it’s delicious - great for this time of year to keep colds at bay thanks to all the anti inflammatory ingredients, a good source of protein, sugar and naturally GF (if that’s your bag, a win for kids (Lyra loves it) and SO quick.

If you’re pushed for time in a morning it takes less than 5 minutes to make, I do it just before getting ready for bed usually (when I’ve suddenly remembered we don’t have anything else in for breakfast!). Here you go!

1/4 cup chia seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp ginger powder
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
pinch of pepper
1 cup coconut or almond milk (I like )
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Some mango cut offs and juice - I chop up some mango to keep in the fridge for topping but add the scraps and the juice left on the stone into this recipe

Pop all the ingredients into a big jar and give it a good stir

Let it sit on the counter for 5 minutes, then give it another good stir getting any clumps at the bottom

Place in the fridge for at least one hour, or overnight.

Enjoy topped with coconut yogurt (I love ) mango and a sprinkle of flax seeds.

You can also make this recipe using Inspired blend (I usually do but had run out on this occasion) which not only has all the spices in this recipe but tons of added nutrients including amino acids (so more protein which is a bonus at breakfast) choline and Vitamin D - an extra dose of goodness!

I hope you enjoy it - I’d love to see any pictures or stories if you make it. Remember to save this post so you have a recipe to hand too 🤍

👋there!

A few more of you have joined me on my little corner of the internet - thanks!

I’m Jo and I’m a BANT Registered Naturopathic Nutritionist (try say that after a few glasses of wine - red obvs.). What you can’t see from my profile page is;

✏️I didn’t always do this job - for years I was a teacher working with littles + used to LOVE working with kiddos (assessments and government guidelines not so much) but my passion for natural health took the lead and I retrained after 10yrs in the classroom

🫶🏼I used to have a pretty awful relationship with food + my body (sorry for that bod) - think lots of calorie counting (ugh) punishment in the gym (ugh again) and horrible self -talk - it took years and a lot of love to get to my happy place - and it’s a big part of my nutrition practice today

👩‍👧The catalyst for my change was seeing my mums journey with brain cancer - her diet, lifestyle and positive mindset extended her pretty poor prognosis and I got to spend many more years with her than expected thanks to how she explored natural health practises and nutrition. When she passed away - I felt utterly inspired by her + a HUGE push to follow my dream job

💻Before I trained as a nutritionist, I started a blog called NorthGirlSouth (I grew up in Yorkshire and now live in Brighton) remember when we used to blog?? Good times man

☕️🍷I believe true health is a balance so wine and coffee are part of the picture for me (and if it’s not for you that’s a-ok too) Nutrition should be and is individual to each of us

👵🏽 I suspect I may be a basic nana in disguise - I love walks in nature (proud member here), slippers (this is new) and autumn TV (cannot tell you how buzzed I am for + already) - actually not so much disguised any more…

👩‍🍼Since becoming a mama myself, my self care looks VERY different. Less polished, less insta worthy but very much a big part of my life. I aim to show you all of it - REAL LIFE wellness is my game

✨I’ve recently landed a dream job with one of my all time favourite brands - In House Nutritionist 🤍

So, welcome friends - happy you’re here

My hormones have been a little haywire of late!

We’ve reduced breastfeeds to only a couple of times a day (and nothing at night) which has triggered a few hormone related feels;

🤪🥹🤯 All the emotions
♥️♥️♥️ Return of my period
🍕🍕🍕Congested skin and breakouts
😴💤😴Weird sleep pattern and energy

Whilst these things are considered ‘normal’ when you’re hormones are in flux, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything the make the ride a little less bumpy!

Check out my top tips above on the things I’m working on at the moment!
