Martlets Hospice

Martlets Hospice Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support.

Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left. Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 25,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

🎬 We’ve made the finals! 🎉

The People’s Choice category of the is now open — and your vote could help shine a national spotlight on the power and importance of hospice care.

Our film, ‘We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?’, has already helped raise vital funds for our hospice services. Now, as a finalist, it has the chance to reach even more people who need to hear Marc’s story.

Marc’s voice shares the comfort and compassion palliative care can bring — but also the very real fear felt by people across the country who worry this support won’t be there when they need it most.

❤️ Every vote helps amplify this message.

Please take a moment to support the film and help us raise urgent awareness of the life‑changing importance of hospice care.

🌟 It takes just 10 seconds to vote.

Today is Disabled Access Day which highlights the importance of accessibility for all.

“Being a group of hospices, we have an opportunity to share facilities and this was a great example of where one of our young people’s needs could be supported that way. Tyler had a great day at Martlets, and the team made us so welcome. We all got a bit soaked – there were bubbles flying! But it was worth it to see Tyler comfortable and having fun.”

— Karen Brailey, lead nurse, Chestnut Tree House.

In this blog, we share how our facilities at Martlets are benefitting our patients, visitors and staff — and our young visitor from Chestnut Tree House!

Warm wishes to those of you celebrating Mother’s Day today. We hope you are able to spend precious time together with those you love.

Mother’s Day can be an emotional day in the calendar if you’re bereaved and feeling the loss of your mum. There’s no “right” way to mark the day, and no obligation to be positive or productive.

Remembering your mum can be gentle, personal, and entirely on your own terms. If it helps to do something, here are ten meaningful ways to remember your mum this Mother’s Day:

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, so we’re re-sharing Alex’s heartwarming story about her mum Paula.

“I'd never hugged my mum as an adult. We knew we loved each other but we never said it as she was from a generation that didn’t show emotion easily. In that moment, I gave her a hug and I said, ‘You know I love you’. And she said, ‘I love you too’.”

When Paula received care from Martlets, it marked the beginning of a deeper connection between mother and daughter. Alex shares how our nurses helped her build a closer relationship with her mum:

Ray is currently being cared for on our inpatient unit. To celebrate his 79th birthday, his wife Jackie and daughter Sarah were able to use our Martlets cafe on a Sunday afternoon for a family party.

Jackie says:

"It made such a difference being able to use the cafe space for friends and family to gather, rather than trying to squeeze everyone in around Ray's bed. It made it feel like a proper family celebration. We brought food in and ordered some sandwiches and I made a pavlova - there was even enough left for the amazing staff to have some! Martlets have gone above and beyond to care for Ray and giving us the space to celebrate Ray's birthday meant so much to us."

Today is World Book Day, a celebration of the joy of reading.

In this blog, Jaheda, a healthcare assistant at Martlets, talks about the healing power of books and the importance of reading to patients on the inpatient ward:

As it’s World Book Day, why not recommend one of your favourite books to friends and family? And if you’re visiting a loved one on the ward, do pop into our Family Room and have a look through our book shelf.

In just over a month, a team of runners from Martlets will be taking on the Brighton 10K to raise vital funds for the hospice - what stars! 🌟

Good luck to Julie, Susan, Lesley, Angela, Ana, Tracy, Kathleen, Lelia and Sophie 💪

Julie, pictured second from the right, said:

"For the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a community nurse specialist with the Martlets community team. My role involves providing palliative care, symptom management, and end-of-life support for patients in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. Every day, I also witness the profound impact this care has on families as they navigate some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

"Martlets is more than a hospice—it’s a lifeline. The care we provide is only possible because of the generosity of people who believe in compassion, dignity, and comfort for those who need it most. Every donation, no matter the amount, contributes to helping someone feel safe, supported, and cared-for during an incredibly vulnerable time. This kindness truly makes a difference."

“When Mum died, several of the care staff cried, which I thought was really touching. They must experience patients dying quite frequently, but obviously they're only human. It showed they genuinely cared about Mum and that was a comfort to us.”

A big thank you to Paul the Painter for donating seven of his prints to our inpatient wards at Martlets!

Pauly is a familiar figure in Brighton and Hove, often seen out and about with his easel and brushes. His wonderful prints of local landmarks have ‘Brightoned’ up our wards and are being enjoyed by patients, staff and visitors.

We’re looking forward to Pauly visiting us again in the summer to capture the beauty of our hospice gardens.
