During Covid-19 we will be looking at the impact on mental health with our Consultants and Therapists at Onemed.
Dr Denton, Consultant Psychiatrist in older adults, shares an insight into what he is experiencing in his patients:
“In older adults we are seeing an exacerbation of existing mood disorders and increased social isolation compounded by difficulties managing existing physical health problems. Where informal support existed from family and formal care packages, this is becoming increasingly difficult with social distancing.
It is harder to get prescriptions or see clinicians in a timely way. Day centres and clubs remain closed. There is less human interaction. An unstructured day with feeling of loneliness can lead to some becoming more withdrawn, despondent, anxious and worried. The constant negative news cycle makes it easier for people to ruminate and focus on their current difficulties.
You may feel bored, frustrated or lonely but its important to remember that it is OK to feel this way and that everyone reacts differently. Remember, this situation is temporary”.
Below are some tips from the NHS on how to look after your mental health during this time:
1. Stay connected with others: this is vital for your mental wellbeing and can be done via the telephone or smart phone applications
2. Stay busy and look at hobbies you can do at home to keep your mind active
3. Keep routine and structure to your day
4. Look after your body and eat well and look at safe exercise to do in the home
5. Stay on top of difficult feelings and reach out if your not managing
6. Limit media and news time as it can be overwhelming
7. Look after your sleep as this is fundamental to your physical and mental wellbeing
8. Plan practical things, continue to access treatment and support for existing medical or mental health
