TRAIN TRE Learn TRE - TRE Trainings, Workshops, and Individual Sessions both online and in person with Deborah Brown

TRE (Tension & Trauma Release Exercise) is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance. I offer both individual and group sessions in TRE in the Brighton, Hove and Sussex area. For consistency and copyright reasons most of the text used on this page is taken from the TRE main site www.traumaprevention.com

Did you know that the Humming bee breath is an excellent way to reduce anxiety? This is because it slows the breath, supporting the physiological reactions that calm the nervous system.

You can practice this breath like this:

Sit in a comfortable position. Sit up tall and allow your shoulders to soften.
Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
Inhale through your nose and then hum your exhale, feeling the resonance in the front of your mouth and nasal cavity. The hum will lengthen your exhale, and you may notice your body relaxing.
Inhale again and repeat, allowing your hum to resonate.
You can carry on for several minutes and then observe the way you feel as you return to a normal breathing pattern.

Have you ever thought about how much is communicated before a single word is spoken?

Non-verbal communication isn't just about crossed arms or eye contact. It goes much deeper than that, and is intricately connected with the nervous system.

When we are stuck in a dysregulated neural state, which might be a freeze response, a hypervigilant fight or flight response or a disassociated state, this can be seen in small ways like tension the jaw or shallow breath.

This is neuroception, our nervous system unconsciously scanning for safety and threat, beneath our conscious awareness.

TRE works because we don't need to talk our way to regulation. The body has a natural way to process emotions: trembling, shaking, releasing, and when we allow it to complete the process, the nervous system can finally exhale.

If you're curious about what your own nervous system might be trying to tell you, let's find out!

Stress and trauma don’t just live in the mind. They live in the body and the nervous system.

When we experience ongoing stress or overwhelm, the body stores tension in the muscles and nervous system. Over time this can show up as tight shoulders, jaw tension, fatigue, anxiety, poor sleep, feeling constantly on edge, or even feeling numb and shut down.

This is why moving the body is such a powerful part of healing.

Movement helps the nervous system complete stress responses that were never fully released. It allows the body to discharge built-up tension and come back into a state of balance.

Walking, shaking, stretching, dancing, breathwork, yoga - all of these can help regulate the nervous system.

A technique that specifically supports this process is TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises).

TRE is a series of simple exercises that gently activate the body’s natural tremor response. These small neurogenic tremors allow the body to release deep muscular tension and calm the nervous system in a very natural way.

This shaking response is something we are born with. Animals do it instinctively after stress, but humans often suppress it.

When we allow the body to tremor safely, it can help:

• release stored stress and tension
• calm the nervous system
• reduce anxiety and overwhelm
• improve sleep
• increase resilience to stress
• reconnect us with our bodies

Healing doesn’t come from doing more or pushing harder, it comes from listening to your body.

When we support the nervous system through movement and practices like TRE, we give the body the chance to finally let go of what it has been holding.

TRE is an incredible tool for first aid, and when you have learned the techniques, you can use it anytime and anywhere to restore peace in your body.

Traumatic events such as car accidents or conflicts can unsettle the balance in your body and your muscles and fascia will hold onto the tension and trauma for many years. Learning to release this can change your life!

Find more information on my website and learn how to use this tool for yourself and with your clients.

It's been a long winter. The appearance of brighter, lighter days and the promise of some warmth to come is just what we need to shake off the cobwebs and make us all feel better.

Here we are, in the middle of March. We're approaching our training in Devon already, and I'm really looking forward to meeting new students and building connections. It's always very special to immerse ourselves in the wonderful healing modality that is TRE, and just being at the beautiful Namaste Barn is a treat in itself.

I love this photo because I'm caught off guard, natural and relaxed. This is what happens when we let go of what we think we 'should' be doing and release our stresses. TRE offers a gentle way to release, and I practice often.

Looking ahead, I'm thinking about deep rest that will enable me to reset and take on new challenges. I hope to share TRE with more of you this year, and I can't wait to dance in the sea!

Much love,

I’ve been reflecting on how much the body holds.

Somatic therapy has been teaching me that healing isn’t always about analysing every thought or finding the perfect words. Sometimes it’s about noticing the signals our bodies are sending us - tight shoulders, shallow breath, restlessness.

Our bodies remember experiences in ways our minds don’t always process right away.

When we slow down and listen, we start to see that emotions are not just stories in the mind, they’re sensations, movements, and energy in the body. A trembling hand, a deep exhale, a stretch after tension. These small moments can be part of releasing what’s been held for a long time.

Reflection in somatic work often looks different from traditional reflection. We might ask:

What do I feel in my body right now?
Where is there tension or softness?
What happens if I breathe into that space?

Healing can start in the body, in the present moment, when we allow ourselves to notice what is going on for us.

In a world that celebrates constant hustle, relaxing can be difficult.

We’re taught that productivity means doing more, working longer, pushing harder, and filling every spare minute with something “useful.” But the truth is, productivity isn’t just about motion, it’s about energy, clarity and sustainability.

Sometimes the most powerful reset isn’t another hour of work.
It’s stepping away.

When you relax, your mind has space to breathe and you can get in touch with your creativity again. Problems that felt impossible suddenly feel manageable, and that's because rest isn’t wasted time, it’s essential for recovery.

When you pause, recharge and allow yourself to relax, your body and mind will thank you.

Relaxation might look like:
• Taking a walk outside
• Listening to music
• Spending time with people you love
• Sitting quietly with your thoughts
• Doing nothing for a while

So if you feel overwhelmed, tired, or stuck, remember that relaxing might be the very best choice you make today.

Many people experience this sense of peace when they discover somatic work.

As humans, we can spend years trying to think our way out of stress, anxiety, or old patterns. But our bodies carry experiences that the mind can’t always resolve by itself. That’s when somatic practices like TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) can provide the solutions we need.

TRE works with the body’s natural ability to release deep tension and stress. Instead of pushing feelings away or trying to control them, the body is given a safe way to let go of what it’s been holding onto.

Over time, many people notice:
• A deeper sense of calm
• Less internal pressure and tension
• Greater connection with their body
• More self-acceptance and ease

Giving your nervous system the time and space it needs to unwind and settle can bring real peace.

Which Nervous System state are you in?

In Polyvagal Theory (developed by Dr. Stephen Porges), there are 3 main nervous system states:

Ventral Vagal: In this state, you'll feel safe, calm and connected. This is a regulated state, known as the "rest and digest" stage.

Sympathetic: This state is often referred to as fight or flight. Here, you'll feel anxious, on edge, stressed or overwhelmed. Your body is preparing to respond to a threat.

Dorsal Vagal: Known as freeze or shutdown. Here, you'll feel numb, disconnected and exhausted. This is a survival response.

We tend to move through these states in order, so you must pass through mobilisation to get from shutdown to safety, and this is why somatic therapy works so well. In somatic therapy, we use tools including movement and breathwork to learn to move efficiently between these states so that we can spend more time in the ventral vagal (safe) state.

Many people are surprised by the deep effect TRE can have on the body and the mind, enabling the release of tension and trauma that may have been stuck for a lifetime.

We are often held back by the stresses we hold onto, and learning to release these, simply and fully, can make a very big difference to the way we move forward in our lives.

TRE can work in a group setting or on a one-to-one basis, and once you have learned the tools, you can use it anytime and anywhere.

What do you love about TRE?
