As we age, we might start to notice our lips getting thinner and small lines coming out from its borders. These lines are more pronounced in the upper lip and usually extend vertically from the Lips (Lip Lines) into the Upper Lips (Upper Lip Lines).
They are sometimes called smokers’ lines, lipstick lines, barcodes or pursing lines. Upper lines are mainly the result of volume loss that comes with age but also due to repetitive pursing of the lips and creasing of the tissue due to intense muscular activity, like running or drinking from straws. Smoking can also contribute to deeper lines due to the toxins in ci******es damaging the skin and regular pursing of the lips.
