🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 7 🌧️💨

Another week done — and another step closer to Málaga! Week 7 went well, and I managed to up the mileage to 29 miles, spread across 4 runs.

The highlight (or maybe the lowlight depending on how you feel about soggy miles!) was a 12-miler on Saturday morning in the pouring rain. The weather has definitely been throwing its own challenges into the mix recently, but I’m trying to embrace the unpredictability… it's all character building, right? 😅

The long run finished with 3 miles on the flat at a quicker pace, helping me push towards race pace and keep things honest when the legs are getting tired.

Hard to believe there are now only 4 weeks to go, and — strangely — things seem to be going pretty well. Long may that continue… 🤞

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 6 🏃‍♂️

Pleased to report that it's been another solid week of training. This week included 4 runs totalling 26 miles, keeping things nice and consistent.

The standout was Saturday’s 12-miler, with the final 3 miles finished at Huddersfield parkrun. It was a great way to push myself through the last part of the run — and being around others definitely helped lift the pace. I came in just over 22 minutes, which felt strong considering the miles already in the legs.

I always enjoy parkrun when I can make it, and Huddersfield’s is such a well-organised and friendly event — makes the miles that bit more enjoyable.

With the half marathon now only 5 weeks away, I’m feeling like the fitness is continuing to build nicely. Steady progress, consistent miles, and still enjoying the process.

Onwards to Week 7.

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 5 🏋️‍♂️

Week 5 done ✅ and another solid week in the bag!

This week included 4 runs totaling 26 miles — a small mileage increase on last week. The highlight was a 10-miler on Sunday, where I mixed in a few quicker, race-pace miles to keep things interesting (and tough!).

Saturday’s run saw me take cover from the rain and hit the treadmill for a 3-mile blast. I’ll be honest — I find treadmill running incredibly boring 😅, but it definitely has its place. It’s great for getting in some structured efforts or intervals without battling the hills that Huddersfield likes to throw at me!

All in all, training’s ticking along well — steady progress, a bit more strength in the legs, and the countdown to Málaga continues.

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 4 🌤️

Week 4 wrapped up with 4 runs totaling 22 miles, including a solid 10-miler on Sunday morning that mixed in some trails — always nice to swap the tarmac for a bit of mud and scenery!

This week wasn’t without its challenges though. Jet lag from my New York trip and a lingering post-trip head cold made a few of those runs tougher than expected. Some days, just getting the shoes on felt like the biggest win! 😅

Still, the miles got done, and I can feel those slow but steady improvements starting to build. Training’s ticking along nicely, and the road to Málaga is feeling that bit more real with each week.

On to Week 5 — hopefully with a bit more energy and a few less sniffles!

Couldn't agree more with this post! Glad it's not only me that has those days when it feels like I'm running in treacle!! 😩

Every runner knows the feeling: some days everything clicks, and other days it feels like your legs are made of lead. Good days and bad race days are part of the sport, and understanding them is key to growing as a runner.

On a good day, your legs feel light, your breathing matches your pace, and your mental focus is sharp. You hit splits effortlessly, your stride feels natural, and even the last kilometer feels strong. It’s a day when training pays off, when months of work culminate in flow. You leave the race feeling exhilarated, energized, and ready for the next challenge.

Then there are the bad days where nothing seems to go right. You’re sluggish from the start, your muscles fatigue early, and even small hills feel like mountains. Mental focus wavers, motivation dips mid-race, and every step feels like a struggle. Sometimes external factors heat, wind, sleep, nutrition play a role, but other times it’s just your body having an off day. It’s frustrating, but it’s also part of the process.

The truth is, both good and bad days teach valuable lessons. Good days reinforce what works: pacing, fueling, mental strategies. Bad days highlight weaknesses, show the limits of preparation, and force you to develop resilience. Every runner experiences both, and learning to accept the bad days without losing confidence is what separates consistent athletes from those who quit at the first hurdle.

Remember, one difficult race doesn’t define your progress, just as one perfect day doesn’t define your potential. Running is about persistence, adaptation, and the long game. So embrace the highs, learn from the lows, and keep showing up because the next race could be your best yet.

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 3 🌆✈️

This week’s miles come with a change of scenery — New York City! 🗽

I managed to fit in 3 runs while on holiday, proving once again that running is the perfect way to explore a new city. From cruising along the Hudson River to taking on the length of 5th Avenue (note to self: far too many road crossings for any kind of rhythm 😅), every run came with its own sights and sounds.

The highlight had to be joining the Brooklyn Bridge parkrun, where the reward for those early miles is an incredible view of the Manhattan skyline — absolutely worth the effort!

All in all, a solid week of running, sightseeing, and soaking up a bit of New York energy before getting back to the regular routine.

The coming week promises to be a bit of a challenge dealing with a busy work schedule and jetlag (I'm not complaining....honestly)!

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 2 ☀️

Week 2 is in the books, and it’s been a good one!

I managed to fit in 5 runs, totaling 23 miles, and felt strong on a few of them — that’s always a nice confidence boost at this stage of training.

The weather also played ball this week, which definitely helped keep the motivation (and pace!) up. Amazing what a bit of sunshine can do for the legs and the mood! 😎

Next week’s looking a bit trickier with some travel coming up, but the plan is to stay flexible and keep those miles ticking over where I can.

Feeling good, staying consistent, and enjoying the process so far!

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 1 🌧️

Week 1 is done and dusted — and what a start it’s been!

I managed to squeeze in 3 runs, totaling 20 miles, around a pretty hectic schedule of work, my son’s football training, and visiting a relative in hospital. Safe to say, finding the time was a workout in itself!

One of those runs was during Storm Amy, which definitely added a “character-building” element to the session. There’s something oddly enjoyable about running headfirst into driving rain and wind — at least, that’s what I kept telling myself at the time! 😅

It’s been a solid start, and I’m already feeling that familiar mix of tired legs and quiet satisfaction. Onward to Week 2 — hopefully with slightly less sideways rain!

☀️🏃‍♂️ New Goal, New Adventure!

On December 14th, I’ll be lining up in sunny Málaga to run another half marathon.

I’ve been running for years now, but each race brings its own challenge — and this time, I’m going to try sharing the journey with you (never done this before!). Over the next 11 weeks, I’ll be posting training updates, lessons learned, and the ups and downs along the way. Think of it as a mix of accountability, storytelling… and the occasional bad running joke (you’ve been warned 😅).

Why share it here? Because running isn’t just about fitness — it’s about consistency, discipline, and showing up, even on the tough days. The same principles apply in business and life.

Training starts now. Time to put one foot in front of the other and see where the road takes me 🚀

I took part in the Ambry 10k run this weekend, organised by the very friendly Almondbury Striders. Very hilly course but great event and the support was fab! Happy with my performance, not so much the race face, that needs more work I feel! 🏃
