Cold water can kill dogs faster than you think.

Winter isn’t just about cold walks.
It’s about water and ice.

Cold water swimming
Even strong swimmers can suffer cold shock, muscle cramping and rapid heat loss. Below 8°C, dogs can panic, tire quickly and struggle to get out.

Frozen ponds, lakes and streams
Ice is unpredictable.
It can crack without warning, trap dogs in freezing water and leave them unable to climb out. Owners often get hurt trying to rescue them.

Fast-flowing winter streams
Cold, fast water plus slippery rocks equals loss of footing and real risk.

Winter safety basics
• Avoid cold water swimming
• Keep dogs on leads near ice
• Never throw toys onto frozen water
• If a dog falls in, do not enter, call for help

Winter fun is fine.
Winter risks need respect.

Cold Weather Walks with you dogs…

Cold weather dog walks. What’s safe and what to watch for.

As the temperature drops, a quick tweak to your dog walk can make a big difference.

General UK veterinary guidance:
• 8°C and above – Safe for most dogs
• 4–8°C – Still safe, but keep walks sensible
• 0–4°C – Caution needed, especially for small, older or short-haired dogs
• Below 0°C – Higher risk. Shorten walks and watch closely

What happens when it’s colder:
• Dogs lose body heat faster, especially slim or short-coated breeds
• Cold muscles are more prone to strains
• Icy ground increases the risk of slips and pad injuries
• Salt and grit can irritate paws and cause cracking
• Prolonged cold exposure can lead to hypothermia

Good cold-weather habits:
• Shorten walks when temperatures drop
• Consider a coat for small, elderly or short-haired dogs
• Check paws after walks and rinse off salt or grit
• Dry your dog properly when you get home
• Watch for shivering, slowing down, lifting paws or reluctance to walk

If your dog is uncomfortable, cold or reluctant, that’s your sign to head home.

Cold weather doesn’t mean no walks, just smarter ones.
