Did you know?
Isocyanates are highly reactive chemicals that are a major cause of occupational asthma and dermatitis in the UK. They are commonly found in polyurethane products such as paints, coatings, foams, adhesives, and varnishes.
High exposure risks are associated with tasks that create airborne mists or vapours, particularly:
Spray painting: Especially in motor vehicle repair, this is a significant cause of occupational asthma.
• Manufacturing: Adhesives, foams, and polyurethane resins production.
• Construction: Applications involving polyurethane paints, foams, glues, and flooring.
• Mixing and pouring: These tasks can also generate harmful airborne concentrations.
Isocyanate exposure is the leading cause of occupational asthma.
It is important to remember that ‘water-based’ paints may contain isocyanates.
Currently the only practical way to monitor the personal exposure from isocyanate spraying (from all routes of exposure) involves the worker providing a urine sample at the end of a shift.
