Importance of a Safety-Critical Work Medical Examination

A safety critical workers medical ensures that workers in high-risk roles are fit to perform their duties safely, protecting both themselves and others. It helps identify health issues that could cause sudden incapacity or impaired performance, reducing the risk of accidents.

These medicals also support legal compliance, promote early detection of health problems, and demonstrate an employer’s commitment to safety and wellbeing in the workplace.

Prohms follows the guidelines from the Society of Occupational Medicine

Safety Critical Worker Medicals include:

General health assessment
Audiometry (hearing tests)
Spirometry (lung function tests)
Skin testing
Vision assessment
Full range of movements
Blood Pressure Check
Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Tier 2 assessment (especially if the role involves the use of vibrating tools)

Did you know?

Isocyanates are highly reactive chemicals that are a major cause of occupational asthma and dermatitis in the UK. They are commonly found in polyurethane products such as paints, coatings, foams, adhesives, and varnishes.

High exposure risks are associated with tasks that create airborne mists or vapours, particularly:

Spray painting: Especially in motor vehicle repair, this is a significant cause of occupational asthma.
• Manufacturing: Adhesives, foams, and polyurethane resins production.
• Construction: Applications involving polyurethane paints, foams, glues, and flooring.
• Mixing and pouring: These tasks can also generate harmful airborne concentrations.
Isocyanate exposure is the leading cause of occupational asthma.

It is important to remember that ‘water-based’ paints may contain isocyanates.

Currently the only practical way to monitor the personal exposure from isocyanate spraying (from all routes of exposure) involves the worker providing a urine sample at the end of a shift.

🔹 Mesothelioma Awareness Day – 26 September 🔹

Today we’re recognising Mesothelioma Awareness Day, a reminder that exposure to asbestos is preventable — and early detection is critical.

Mesothelioma is a cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure, and symptoms may not appear for decades. This makes health surveillance a vital part of protecting your workforce.

At Prohms Occupational Health, we support employers with ongoing health surveillance to help detect early signs of work-related illness.

Let’s work together to reduce risk, protect workers, and save lives.
