When most people think about becoming “healthier”, the first thing that comes to mind is often our physical wellbeing, exercising more, eating better, losing weight, or getting fitter. These are all important, but what’s interesting is that we rarely start by thinking about our mental wellbeing, even though it sits at the centre of everything we do.
The truth is, our mental wellbeing often shapes our physical wellbeing.
If we feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, or burnt out, it becomes much harder to stay motivated, make nourishing food choices, move our bodies, or look after ourselves consistently. When our mind is struggling, even simple healthy habits can feel exhausting.
But when we begin by supporting our mental health first, everything else becomes more sustainable.
When we feel calmer, clearer, and more balanced mentally, we naturally start making choices that support our bodies too. We move more because it feels good. We rest when we need to. We nourish ourselves rather than punish ourselves.
So what might putting your mental wellbeing first actually look like?
• Taking time each day to slow down and check in with how you feel
• Setting boundaries that protect your energy
• Getting enough rest and allowing yourself to switch off
• Practising mindfulness, journaling, or breathing exercises
• Speaking kindly to yourself rather than pushing through constant pressure
• Reaching out for support when you need it
Physical health and mental health are not separate — they are deeply connected. But often the most powerful place to begin is with the mind.
Because when your mind feels supported, your body often follows.
Health isn’t just about how your body looks it’s about how your life feels.
