**** News from London Road Cemetery****

⏱ Expected duration: 2–3 weeks

Some residents may be aware that a small section of London Road Cemetery can become waterlogged during wet winter months, making access to some graves difficult and potentially creating subsidence issues for memorials.

Godmanchester Town Council has recently commissioned the CDS group to carry out a professional site assessment to better understand the cause of this issue and identify appropriate solutions. The report confirmed that the underlying clay soil and the gradient of the site mean that rainwater naturally collects in one low-lying area of the cemetery during prolonged wet weather.

To address this, the Council is planning a series of sympathetic improvement works designed to:
• Reduce standing water in the affected area
• Improve ground firmness and accessibility during wet conditions
• Protect graves and memorials, with minimal disruption to visitors

The recommended approach includes regular ground aeration and sand top-dressing to strengthen the surface, alongside the installation of discreet drainage along the edge of existing paths to help water flow away more effectively. During aeration works, you may notice small soil cores left on the surface. These will be cleared as soon as possible. Although the area may appear untidy for a short period, this process is necessary and will lead to a much-improved surface in the long term. Importantly, these works avoid disturbing graves or memorials.

The cemetery will remain open throughout the scheduled works. All work will be carried out with the utmost care, dignity, and respect for this space.

Yesterday we had the funeral of a gentleman who was a huge motorbike fan. It’s was lovely to see the beautiful Triumph Bonneville take him on his final journey.

Over the years, the Triumph motorcycle hearses have found their way into films, television, and the nation’s consciousness, not because they are showpieces, but because they evoke a sense of tradition, character, and craftsmanship.

Families often hear the same soft remarks as the cortege passes by:

“What a beautiful outfit.”
“A proper British bike.”

That day, we didn’t just oversee a funeral.
We witnessed a man arrive exactly as he wished.

We recently had a stall at Blue Diamond Garden Centre and we invited people up to enter our free raffle to name the Llama. The prize was not only to own the Llama but a Gift Card aswell. On Friday we got a member of staff to pull a name out of the hat. The winner was Gerald and the lucky owner has been informed. Thank you to all those that stopped and spoke with us, took some information and also entered our raffle. Congratulations again to the winner 🏆 🎄☃️🎉

Thank you all for coming to our first Christmas memorial service. Your presence brought comfort, strength, and a sense of togetherness to an evening filled with both remembrance and hope. Sharing this time, reflecting, praying, and honouring our loved ones, made the service truly meaningful. We are deeply grateful for your support, your kindness, and the love you’ve shown by being here this evening.
