Danny House in one of England's great country houses and prestigious retirement properties. Nestling at the foot of the South Downs within the National Park, this retirement home offers the best of all worlds - gracious retirement accommodation combined with all modern comforts, but without the stress of everyday life, for carefree senior living. This retirement home is within walking distance of Hurstpierpoint (1 mile), which offers a good selection of shopping facilities, and the train station at Hassocks is just 1.5 miles, offering a 10 minute journey to Brighton, or into London in under one hour. There is also a very good care home nearby - St Georges Park, Ditchling. To live in a fully serviced retirement apartment at Danny means being able to forget about the everyday worries of running a house, as this is done for you. The kitchen is in the hands of two well-qualified cooks, and excellent breakfast, lunch and supper are provided every day. Your apartment is regularly cleaned and maintained. In summer, there are large gardens at your disposal. If you are a keen gardener, there is plenty of scope for you to go on exercising your skills, whether in the walled garden or perhaps tending a vegetable plot. If you prefer just to take it easy out of doors, there is plenty of shade. There is also a croquet lawn, grass tennis court, ponds for fishing, farm animals, and table tennis. The retirement estate lies off the road from Hurstpierpoint to Hassocks, and is only eight miles from Brighton. If you have no car, we provide transport to take you shopping once a week, to the nearby medical centres and to cultural events in Brighton.

On This Day in History – 13 October 1918

In the Great Hall of Danny House, Hurstpierpoint, Prime Minister David Lloyd George convened the Imperial War Cabinet to decide how the war should end.

Gathered around the long oak table were leaders from across the Empire — including representatives from Canada, Australia, South Africa, and India. Together, they agreed the exact terms of the armistice that would be offered to Germany.

These discussions at Danny House directly paved the way for the Armistice of 11 November 1918, bringing four years of devastating conflict to a close.

107 years later, Danny House still carries the weight of that history — a Sussex home that briefly became the centre of the world’s hopes for peace.

Join author Paul Spencer Sochaczewski for a fascinating live presentation on the life and travels of Alfred Russel Wallace, the brilliant naturalist and co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection.

Wallace spent time here in Hurstpierpoint, where his wife’s family home Treeps provided the peace and inspiration to write The Malay Archipelago — one of the greatest travel books of the Victorian era.

This talk explores Wallace’s adventurous life, his enduring friendship with his assistant Ali, and the remarkable discoveries that shaped modern science.

We’re excited to welcome HURSTfolk. music festival back to Danny House for an afternoon of music with an outstanding all-female line-up, featuring three remarkable acts.

Heather McClelland
A HURSTfolk. favourite, Heather returns to Danny House for her third consecutive year, following a run of sold-out shows. Known for her crystalline voice, evocative songwriting and compelling stage presence, Heather’s performances blend original songs with carefully chosen folk material, creating an atmosphere that’s both intimate and powerful.

Jo Burke
An internationally touring singer and multi-instrumentalist, Jo’s career spans composing for theatre and film, leading choirs, and performing with ensembles from the Swiss band Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp to the London Hardingfele Lag. She is co-founder of The Cunning Folk of Sussex, exploring plant folklore through traditional song, and musical director of Brighton Folk Choir, whose seasonal performances have become beloved community events. Jo is now completing her debut solo album of traditional songs, reimagined in her own distinctive voice.

Made In The Shade
Back at HURSTfolk. after a sold-out performance in 2024, Made In The Shade are friends from Hurst and Cuckfield who sing together in close harmony. Their a ca****la sets mix pop, rock, folk and more, delivered with energy and joy. Since forming in 2020, they’ve performed across the South of England, winning audiences over with their vibrant style. This year they’ll be introducing their fabulous new member, Josie.

Apartment 24 is a charming one-bedroom cottage situated in the northern courtyard, forming half of the former coach house. The ground floor comprises a cosy living room, a small kitchen, and a hallway, while the first floor offers a spacious bedroom and a bathroom.

The cottage overlooks a brick-paved courtyard facing south, providing a serene outdoor space to sit and enjoy the ambience.

Living at Danny

Living at Danny allows residents to forget about everyday chores. Breakfast, lunch, and supper are served in our dining room, with all meals prepared by our experienced chefs who offer a varied and interesting menu. The monthly charge includes cleaning, lighting, heating, maintenance, and council tax. Residents can enjoy the 100-acre gardens and estate, and we take pride in our home-produced lamb and pork sausages. Our full-time staff of 10 ensures a high level of personal service.

Community and Activities

Our unique and civilised way of life is enjoyed by 25 retired individuals. The Great Hall serves as our drawing room, hosting a musical soirée every Monday with high-quality musicians performing. Additionally, we offer weekly exercise and dance classes, along with other cultural events.

We are delighted to be able to offer for rent Apartment 21, a unique ground floor residence in the former Elizabethan kitchen

This spacious and character-filled apartment is located on the ground floor of Danny House, overlooking the peaceful walled garden. Once the original Elizabethan kitchen, the apartment retains its historic features, including a vast fireplace once used for cooking, high ceilings, and a tall Elizabethan window that floods the space with natural light.

The apartment offers a generous internal area of approximately 758 sq.ft. and includes a mezzanine bedroom, small kitchen, shower room, and an office space.

Life at Danny
