At this morning's Winter Yoga Workshop, we lay in a circle of light, with candles and fairy lights all around. Lights and candles during the Winter season provide so much comfort, peace and calm. We spent 2 magical hours nourishing our souls, moving slowly from one posture to another respecting nature's pace during the Winter season. We acknowledged how the natural world at this time of year, retreats, sleeps, rests and lies dormant, conserving energy, in preparation for the Spring. As human beings, we must take time to do the same, we are afterall natural beings. This is not just a wellness trend, the ancient holistic practices of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine recommend this. We celebrated the fast approaching Winter Solstice, and learned the significance of this day, which has been celebrated for thousands of years as it marks the return of light, as the Earth starts its journey tilting back towards the Sun in the northern hemisphere. We shared a candlelit meditation where we made a solemn vow to nurture ourselves, and take time out from the busyness of the festive season whenever possible. We completed the workshop with a beautiful visualisation, walking across a frosty open landscape, being aware of the docile energy of the Winter season, and collecting foliage from an ancient yew tree to make a wreath. Wreath making is a tradition that has been carried out for thousands of years, they are a symbol of the continuation of the wheel of the year and everlasting life.
To witness everyone looking so relaxed, lying beneath their warm blankets, in a circle of light was breathtaking. I'm sure everyone could have stayed there for another hour.
'Take time to slow down during this Winter season, respecting nature's pace. Remember the beauty of stillness and the restorative sound of silence during this festive season.'ππ
