☀️ Hot weather and little ones – what you need to know 💦
When it’s hot out, babies and young children can get dehydrated really quickly and they don’t always know how to tell you they’re thirsty. Their bodies aren’t great at cooling down yet, so it’s up to us to help them stay safe and hydrated.
Here's a reminder of some simple ways to help keep your child cool and well in the heat:
💧 Offer water often – little sips throughout the day really add up. Fun cups or straws can make drinking more fun.
🍉 Water-rich snacks like watermelon and strawberries are great for hydration (and super tasty!).
👕 Keep clothing light, loose, and breathable – sometimes just a nappy is enough for babies.
🌳 Stick to the shade or head out early/late – avoid the hottest part of the day.
🌬️And carry a small portable fan if you have one – it can be a lifesaver when you're out and about
💦 Find your local splash park or paddling pool – it’s a fun and safe way for kids to cool off and burn some energy!
Look out for signs of dehydration which are fewer wet nappies, dry mouth, sleepiness, or just not seeming themselves.
REMEMBER If you're ever unsure, speak to your doctor or call 111.
