Does Hijama Break the Fast in Islam?

Hijama (cupping therapy) is a well-known Sunnah treatment that many Muslims practice for health benefits. A common question arises during Ramadan: does hijama break the fast?

The majority of scholars agree that hijama does not invalidate the fast, as there is no clear evidence in the Quran or authentic Hadith stating that it does. The one hadith mentioning breaking has been abrogated. However, some scholars, such as those from the Hanbali school, believe that cupping weakens the body and could lead to breaking the fast.

The strongest view, followed by many contemporary scholars, is that hijama does not break the fast but should be done with caution. If it causes weakness, it is better to delay it until after iftar. Ultimately, it remains a personal decision based on one's health and ability to fast.

Abdullāh bin ‘Abbās (radiyallāhu ‘anhumā) stated: “The Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) had himself cupped whilst in a state of ihrām and while he was fasting. Al Bukhari.

It was narrated by Thabit Al-Bunani (radhi Allahu anhu) that Anas bin Malik (radhi Allahu anhu) was asked whether they disliked the cupping for a fasting person. He replied in the negative and said, "Only if it causes weakness." Sahih Al Bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 161.
