This 10" Tibetan singing bowl is richly engraved with symbols that unite Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan astrology.
At the center is a mandala with lotus petals and vajras (dorjes). The lotus represents purity and awakening, while the vajra symbolizes indestructible wisdom and enlightenment. Surrounding the mandala are seated Buddhas, likely the Five Dhyani Buddhas—Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. Each embodies a different enlightened quality: universal wisdom, mirror-like clarity, equanimity, compassion, and all-accomplishing action. Together they represent the transformation of human afflictions into the five wisdoms of awakening.
Around the rim are the 12 Tibetan zodiac animals, each in its own circle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep/Goat, Monkey, Bird (Rooster), Dog, and Pig. These form a repeating 12-year cycle that, combined with the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), creates a 60-year cycle. The zodiac guides Tibetan astrology and is used to understand personality, fortune, and karmic patterns.
Each animal carries symbolic qualities:
Rat – clever, adaptable
Ox – patient, strong
Tiger – bold, passionate
Rabbit – gentle, compassionate
Dragon – powerful, visionary
Snake – wise, intuitive
Horse – energetic, free-spirited
Sheep/Goat – kind, creative
Monkey – clever, playful
Bird (Rooster) – observant, outspoken
Dog – loyal, protective
Pig – generous, honest
Summary:
This bowl represents both the path to enlightenment (through the Buddhas, lotus, and vajra) and the cycles of time and karma (through the zodiac). It is both a meditation tool and a reminder of the balance between timeless wisdom and the rhythms of worldly existence.
