🌍✨ Community Food Pantry 🍏🥖

The Community Food Pantry at The Lantern Ilfracombe is open and ready to use, but the shelves are looking a little empty at the moment. 💚

This pantry was created to help prevent food waste and support our community, and it’s here for everyone, whether you’d like to donate, take what you need, or swap items. 🙌

📍 Location: The Lantern Ilfracombe Courtyard, High Street, Ilfracombe

🛒 How It Works: Donate food, take what you need, or swap items!

We’d love your help to get it stocked up again! If you have any non-perishable food items or hygiene products to spare, please consider popping them in the pantry, every little bit makes a difference. 💙

Together, we can reduce waste, support one another, and keep kindness flowing in our community. 🌱💚

Our regular Gentle Walk at Bicclescombe Park brought together about 25 participants including Fudge & Sid 🐾. These walks are all about inclusion: you don’t have to walk the full route. Some people enjoy the stroll, while others prefer to pause at resting points or simply be in the park and join in for the socialising.

We explored the herb garden (with thriving rosemary, thyme & sage), learned about autumn pollinators with Jamie from Finding Nature’s Footprints, and admired the cheeky grey squirrels.

Although the mill café was closed, the group shared lifts and enjoyed refreshments at the Landmark Theatre café instead. Another beautiful day in the park, filled with connection, nature, and community.

This is what green social prescribing can look like: Moving, Learning, and Taking Notice together for a better understanding of the wild places we love.

As part of this year’s , our gentle walking group and representatives from North Devon Coast National Landscape spent time talking with Sharron and Chris Blackmoor, Sea Watch North Devon’s coordinators, about why it’s just as important to report when you don’t see dolphins or porpoises as when you do.

“Last couple of years our sightings have gone right down. We used to see one sighting an hour, now we might go months without one.” Sharron - Sea Watch Volunteer

Porpoises seem to be avoiding the warmer inshore waters of the Bristol Channel. Sea temperatures have risen by around 5°C, which might be pushing them further out where it’s cooler. Even at known hotspots like Lundy, watchers are seeing seabirds diving for food, but no dolphins or porpoises.

Other factors could include depleted food sources due to fishing, or changes in migration patterns. Meanwhile, species like bluefin tuna and Risso’s dolphins are making a return, possibly due to the same climate shifts.

“We think they’re still out there… just further offshore. But the data only builds if we all keep watching and reporting.” Chris - Sea Watch Volunteer

No sighting? Still important. Every “none spotted” tells the Sea Watch Foundation something about our changing seas.
