A Nottingham great-grandad who takes gifts to poorly children in hospital every day says he has no plans to stop after turning 97. Ken 'Bob' Storer has been making daily donations to the Queen's Medical Centre for more than two decades. Each day, after finishing his morning cleaning shift at a printing firm, Bob hops on a bus with bags full of pads and coloured card, as well as crayons and chocolate 🥰

A petition has been started after it was announced the Hawthorns in Buxton is under consultation for closing and more than 1,100 people have signed saying they want to keep the residential care home open. The care home faces the prospect of closure in November and if it goes ahead the residents will need to find alternative housing and staff will lose their jobs 🙁

The RCN has launched new statutory compliance guidance for care home managers. It focuses on requirements for buildings and premises across independent health and social care services in the UK. It includes a checklist for managers; context about their duties in managing health and safety; and what to know about specific issues such as asbestos, legionella, gas and lifting equipment.

Vacancy rates in social care are back to pre-Covid levels, according to a report from Skills for Care. The report suggested that vacancy rates for 2024/25 fell to 7%, which is similar to levels before 2021/22, when the rate peaked at 10.5%. The total number of vacant posts was 111,000, a 12.4% decrease on the previous year.

The Salvation Army is considering transferring or closing its residential care homes as it is no longer able to maintain the “high standards our residents need”, it has said. The Christian charity, which runs 11 residential care homes across the UK, announced that it would “transition from providing residential care for older people to grow its community-based support model”.
