A new report released by carehome.co.uk reveals how the UK’s care home market is evolving amid rising costs, growing demand and increasing complexity of care needs. The data shows that average weekly care home self-funded fees increased by 10% in the year to December 2025, as providers responded to rising wage costs, energy prices and broader inflationary pressures. The average care home now provides 47 beds, with the strongest growth among homes with 60-79 beds.

A two-tier health system is emerging with people increasingly paying for tests and treatments on the private sector to beat NHS waits, Healthwatch England has warned. Feedback from patients combined with polling suggested use of the private sector is on the rise, with long NHS waits said to be a key factor. The government said it is making improvements, adding it is determined to reduce the delays that meant some felt the need to pay fore care.

Almost all NHS trusts are missing a major cancer target with some of the worst performers seeing only about half of patients on time. The NHS has a long-standing target for 85% of patients to wait no longer than 62 days from their cancer referral being received to beginning treatment. It has failed to do so at a national level since 2014.

A "critical incident" has been declared at Nottingham University Hospitals due to an increase in demand the trust has struggled to meet. The hospital stated that it had seen "significant demand" on services in the last week, particularly in A&E, which had resulted in patients suffering "unacceptable and lengthy waits" in corridors.

Care home costs are expected to rise in 2026. Half of care home residents aged 65+ pay privately, while the rest receive local authority funding based on their assets. The average annual costs of residential care is £67,496 and nursing care £79,820. There is currently no cap on care home fees in the UK.
