I have struggled to find the words to share this story, for almost a year.
Mostly, because of what the top image represents.
An industry which is highly unregulated, with further unpredictable elements such as the genuninity of products & the frightening lack of accountability amongst some injectors.
And that is exactly what happened here. From what I can only assume is lack of understanding and lack of accountability - this was a missed opportunity to provide a service which encompassed excellent care before, during and after treatment.
Robust knowledge and understanding when providing invasive treatments is an absolute necessity. Not just during your treatment, but afterwards, too.
Ignorance is no excuse - and unfortunately this is an example of somebody being really, really let down by their injector.
This patient was referred to me after almost 3 weeks of struggling with progressive symptoms, for which they had tried to return to their original injector for advice and support.
After being dismissed, symptoms unfortunately progressed and led to absesses within the lip.
After attending her GP and subsequently A & E where the absesses were drained, I received a call to provide further support - as unfortunately things didn’t seem to be getting any better.
In association with my own network; we worked really, really hard over the next 3 weeks to try and rescue the lips from permanent scarring.
These images were taken 26 days apart. How about that for one heck of an outcome?
Treatment was intense, and my patient was so very compliant throughout.
The good news is, I don’t see cases like this everyday. And in further good news, there are tonnes of wonderful stories which involve excellent care & excellent aesthetic results.
All I ask of you is to ensure that your injector has a medical background to ensure experience of managing complications & side effects, in-depth knowledge of treating the skin (and underneath it) - and mostly, accountability for you and the care you receive. Ideally, they prescribe. But if they don’t, are they working towards this, and do they work closely with an experienced prescriber?
Forget social media. It doesn’t matter about numbers of followers. Word of mouth recommendations are a superb way to find an injector you can trust.
Meet them, chat with them. Ask them ALLLL the questions. Please don’t rush into anything.
Myself and this lovely patient are so, so happy with this excellent outcome. No scarring, no permanent damage.
It could have been very different.
