❓Which tissues of the body get stronger with fitness?

🎯 With consistent and targeted exercise over a period of time, we begin to feel fitter and our tissues gradually become more resilient to injuries.

💪Progressively loading involves continuously increasing the physical demands on the musculoskeletal system in order to increase muscle size, strength and endurance.

However, it is not just our muscles that benefit from progressive loading..

🦴Our bones will start to get tougher when put under pressure with resistance exercise. Resistance training has even been shown to reverse osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

🙌 Tendons and ligaments have also been shown to increase in thickness as a result of continuous load.

🏃‍♀️ Individuals who regularly run, seem to have thicker hip and knee cartilage, as well as thicker intervertebral discs, in comparison to those of similar ages who do not run.

- progressive loading leads to tissue resilience and injury prevention

💥Lower back pain - Do’s & Dont’s💥

😱Its easy to freak out and start catstrophising as soon as we have a bit of lower back pain, thinking about all the worst possible scenarios

😇Truth is, back pain is super common (over 80% of people will experience it at least some point in their life) and is rarely serious

❌Usually, scans are not necessary and most cases will ease off within 6 weeks.

🚶🏽‍♀️When you get a flare up, the BEST thing you can do is… keep as ACTIVE as possible. Avoid complete bed rest, find movements that you can tolerate and temporarily limit those you cannot.

🔥Mechanical issues and soft-tissue injuries are the main cause of low back pain and can be temporarily relieved with HEAT eg. Heat patches and hot water bottles.

💊If you decide to take painkillers, consider NSAIDS (like ibuprofen), but always talk to your GP before taking medications

👣Osteoarthritis (OA) is degenerative condition of the cartilage present in synovial joints and most commonly affects the knee and hip. Symptoms usually include pain, swelling, joint stiffness, limited range of motion and difficulty with many functional tasks. Severe pain or functional loss associated with OA of the knee or hip can lead to joint replacement surgery.

✅The last picture is a great summary of currently recommended treatments for the management of knee and hip osteoarthritis

🏃🏼‍♀️Physiotherapy is a great place to start if you think you have arthritis. First line treatment should be exercise, weight loss/weight management and self-management strategies should be 🔝 priority for all individuals with knee and hip osteoarthritis, regardless of disease severity!
