💫 It’s not just about the weight

This amazing client lost 12lbs in 12 weeks, after years of struggling.

But here’s what’s even more powerful:

✔️ She didn’t need a gym
✔️ She didn’t follow fads
✔️ She gained energy, clarity, and relief from allergies

Together, we focused on:

✨ Personalised nutrition (she had numerous nutrient deficiencies).
✨ Real food (that works for her body).
✨ Education, not restriction - a life lesson for what works for her.

When you get to the root of your symptoms, the changes ripple through your whole system.

📩 If you’re ready for this kind of change - weight loss that feels like a side benefit of genuine wellbeing, let’s talk.

The missing piece? Nervous system regulation.

If your vagus nerve isn’t firing properly, your gut won't either.

Gagging might sound extreme, but stay with me…

The gag reflex is mediated by the vagus nerve.

When gently triggered, it can stimulate vagal tone and support better:
✨ Gastric acid secretion
✨ Gut Motility (preventing constipation)
✨ Enzyme release (to help break down your food)
✨ Gut-brain communication

🏋️‍♀️Think of this like resistance training for your vagus nerve, to enhance digestion.

😛Use a clean tongue depressor or back of your toothbrush. Press gently near the back of the tongue once or twice – enough to activate, not cause distress.

😭Your eyes may water, it may not feel all that pleasant, gagging is after all a protective reflex.

💡 Do this daily for 2–4 weeks and track how your gut feels

😆 Or maybe this one is not for you?

Stress, Saliva & Indigestion – What’s the Link?

Ever eaten a meal while stressed and felt like it “just sat there”?

Here’s why 👇

When you’re in fight-or-flight mode, the body shuts down saliva production to redirect energy toward survival.

When you are 'running from the tiger' the body is set in 'escape from danger' mode, and not preparing for a sit down meal.

This means:
❌ Less saliva = poor bolus formation
❌ Weaker enzyme activity
❌ Less microbial protection
❌ Increased risk of reflux, bloating & indigestion

Stress also slows stomach acid production and gut motility, meaning food lingers longer in the stomach, and digestion suffers.

💡 Before your next meal:

Assess how you feel..... are you..

🥹Feeling worried or anxious
🤬Irritated or annoyed
😵‍💫Wired

If you try to eat when the body is not primed you can experience indigestion, heartburn, reflux, and bloating.

Turning in to how you are feeling, and switching your mindset to 'rest and digest' may be all you need to overcome these symptoms.

- Pause
- Breathe slowly
- Do not eat until you feel calm and grounded.

“Digestion starts before the first bite.

Calm your nervous system, and your gut will follow.”

When you think of your most favourite food, close your eyes and imagine eating it what do you notice first?

Your mouth waters ....

Saliva isn’t just spit – it’s the first digestive fluid your body produces.

It plays multiple roles:

✔️ Lubricates food into a smooth bolus for safe swallowing

✔️ Contains enzymes like amylase and lipase to begin breaking down carbs and fats

✔️ Delivers immune cells (like IgA and lysozymes) that defend against pathogens

🦷 It also buffers acids and helps protect your teeth and gums.

Without adequate saliva:

😋It is difficult to chew, food and swallow
🤐Your mucous membranes can become traumatised more easily.
🤢Digestion is compromised
🤺The gut has to work harder in the digestive process.
🔥Inflammation and irritation can follow

Dry mouth is uncomfortable ....

Chewing Sparks the Entire Digestive Chain

😁 I am a big fan of teeth.
😷 As a dentist, I was always devastated when my patients would flippantly say
' oh just take it out'

The story was often 'its a back one, no-one will see that it is missing'

🥗 But.... your body will know that it is missing, it could compromise your ability to munch your way through the crunchy and fibrous food which are so good for us!

🦷 While I do not advise leaving a diseased tooth in the mouth - this is a story for another day - I am keen to see teeth saved whenever possible.

Mastication does more than break down food, it triggers a whole-body digestive response:

✔️ Activates salivary enzymes - the initial stage of digestion.
✔️ Primes stomach acid for release - helps to digest protein, and destroy bacteria.
✔️ Signals the gallbladder and pancreas - further digestion and fat emulsification.
✔️ Stimulates gut movement - moving food along the GI tract.

🤢 Inadequate chewing can disrupt this cascade, leaving food poorly digested and the gut overwhelmed, and even inflamed.

How well are you chewing?
Count the number of times you chew before swallowing.

Is food fully chomped before you swallow?

If you have issues chewing as a result of tooth problems, ill-fitting dentures, gum disease or TMJ issues let your dental team know, seek advice, and optimise your masticatory ability.

Stomach Acid – The Unsung Hero of Digestion

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is vital for:
• Protein breakdown
• Absorbing B12, zinc, calcium, iron
• Keeping bacteria and parasites in check

Yet many people have too little stomach acid — especially if under stress, aging, or using reflux medications (proton pump inhibitors (PPI) - medications which stop stomach acid being produced).

Our stomachs are designed to have plenty of stomach acid.

Problems arise generally, when we don't have enough, or it is in the wrong place e.g. the oesophagus.

Symptoms of low HCl may include:
• Bloating after meals
• Reflux
• Burping
• Undigested food in stools

If you have reflux, don’t assume it’s too much acid. It might be the opposite.

At The Emporium of Health we aim to uncover your 'WHY?'. We do to just 'treat' your symptoms.

If you are experiencing symptoms which could be related to low stomach acid, or if you are taking PPI medications, and now have some concerns, please book in and find out your WHY. We would be delighted to help!

Are you still eating on the run?

🍽 Your digestive system only works properly in a calm state.

When we eat in “fight or flight” mode:

- Stomach acid drops
- Enzymes and bile aren’t released efficiently
- Blood is diverted away from the gut

The result? Incomplete digestion, inflammation, and long-term gut issues.

The opposite side to 'fight and flight' is 'rest and digest' - that just about says it all.

Switch your nervous system to parasympathetic - rest and digest - before eating.

💡 Top tips:

🪑 Sit down
🖥 Take time away from your desk (preferably outside)
🫁 Breathe gently, but deeply
🙅‍♀️Avoid screens and multitasking
🥗 Focus on the task in hand

Try three slow breaths before your next meal. Your gut will thank you.

The Lost Art of Chewing - Why It Matters More Than You Think - and thinking about food is important too!!

🦷 Chewing isn’t just about breaking food into smaller pieces. It’s the critical first step of digestion that activates the rest of your gut.

When we chew thoroughly:

- We send signals to the brain to prepare the stomach, pancreas, and gallbladder

- We support stomach acid production, pancreatic enzyme release and gallbladder contraction. This helps us to further digest protein, carbohydrates and fats.

- We ease the burden on the gut further down the line

If larger food particles reach the small intestine, it can lead to increased inflammation, damage to the delicate lining of the gut, and may contribute towards autoimmunity.

Poor chewing contributes to bloating, reflux, and nutrient malabsorption.

What is on your list of digestive symptoms?

Top Tip - Masticate well

- Sit to eat
- Breathe
- Chew each bite 20–30 times
- Swallow, when food is well masticated
- Take smaller bites, do not add extra mouthfuls, or overfill your mouth
- Slow down
- Taste your food

Are you chewing well? If not - what is going on for you?

Small Daily Habits, Big Cellular Shifts 🌿

It’s not always about expensive supplements or complicated routines.

✨ Some of the most powerful health upgrades are completely free.

I would encourage you to begin adding in these simple habits

☀️ Start with a sunrise or sunset walk.
The light frequency at these times (gentle, full-spectrum light) helps regulate your circadian rhythm, balancing cortisol, supporting sleep, and optimising hormone health.

🦶 Walk barefoot on natural ground.
This simple habit, known as grounding or earthing, helps rebalance the body’s electrical charge, supporting reduced inflammation and better energy levels.

☀️ Expose your skin to midday sun (between 12–2pm in the UK).
A few minutes of safe sun exposure without burning helps your body naturally produce vitamin D, crucial for immune function, mood regulation, and even mitochondrial health - more on mitochondria coming soon!!

At a cellular level, these practices:
✔️ Improve mitochondrial efficiency
✔️ Support better energy production
✔️ Reduce oxidative stress
✔️ Help regulate your internal clock and mood

🌿 Simple, natural, and free.

I qualified as a dentist in 1996 — nearly 30 years ago!

When I started my Master’s degree in Nutritional Therapy, I realised there was still so much to learn about how the body truly functions, and what’s needed for an optimally functioning system.

Nutrition was just the beginning… there’s so much more!

Training and certifying in Functional Medicine took me on a much deeper dive into what disrupts body systems.... and how we can overcome it.

My personal experience with neck pain and fatigue after the pandemic forced me to step away from dentistry for a while.

It was an extremely challenging time, but it allowed me to take a step back and see oral health from a whole new perspective - as a gateway to whole-body health.

The mouth is connected to the rest of the body.

What happens in the mouth doesn’t stay in the mouth.

In fact, oral health can influence your risk of systemic diseases like dementia, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, and even certain cancers.

Today, my focus is on optimising oral health and educating patients on how it can impact their overall health and disease outcomes.

I’m currently working at in a hygiene role.

If you’d like to find out more, give them a call and book an appointment
I’d love to see you there!
