Well folks, it's been a privilege to know and treat you, but I'm now retired.

Contact Emily Macdonald at Robust Physiotherapy in Inverness for ante and post natal and gynae problems. For male pelvic health including pelvic pain, either contact NHS Highland pelvic health physiotherapy service (via NHS Highland website on the Physiotherapy page), or alternatively Bill Taylor in Edinburgh - not many options closer I'm afraid.
Just for clarity, the few folk with appointments booked will be seen!
Wishing everyone the very best.

Whatever next!

While it's a great idea to observe your poo, and if you have any bleeding or persistent changes in bowel habit discuss it with your GP, this is definitely obsession!

Products like Dekoda can run up to $600 and photograph your every bowel movement – but who owns that data?

I am no longer accepting referrals due to my retirement at the end of the year.

Dietary fibre.... I'm seeing posts in the media about 'fibre maxing' , which is about getting as much fibre into your diet as possible. While in PRINCIPLE this is a good idea, it's not great just to massively increase your fibre intake overnight. Our gut bacteria take time to adapt, and if you just leap into a fibre max diet you could well end up with... constipation, or the opposite, diarrhoea. Take your dietary changes slowly.

I don't know what's popping up on your FB these days, but mine has lots of ads for va**nal phototherapy (especially I*****a) and magnetic chair (now in beauty therapists premises near you😱).

The adverts I have seen for these things promise the elixir of youth for your va**na and bladder. Not only that, they imply that pelvic floor muscle exercises (pfme) require huge effort and time commitment and are ineffective.

The research says otherwise. Many randomised controlled trials show that pfme work to improve urinary leakage and pelvic organ prolapse. Not only that, but you only have to spend a few minutes a day doing your exercises. It's free, quick, easy and effective.

But big business wants to make money out of your problem. They bank on you wanting a quick, easy fix with little effort on your part (what health care professionals call 'the magic wand'). Come on....pay us... we'll sort you out.

I haven't seen much in the way of independent randomised controlled trials for these new and expensive fixes. Now that may be because the trials haven't been done yet. But what do you want?
The free easy fix (takes a bit of time).
Or the unproven expensive might or might not be a fix.

Constipation....not something to be ignored.
The bowel needs a good diet, with plenty of fibre (a mix of soluble and insoluble), enough water, regular exercise (and enough exercise). A comfortable and private toilet helps. Abdominal massage is very useful. A "squatty potty" stool can be very useful.
But if you are doing all these things and still can't go, please get professional help.

For only the 2nd time since Pelvic Physiotherapy Highland started, I am having to raise my prices....

As of 7/5/25, prices are £80 for first appointment, and £50 for return appointment.

Highland ladies.....I'm hearing reports that GPs are no longer fitting new pessaries (they will do pessary changes for existing patients.)
Can you get in touch if this has affected you, or you have more information.
Thank you!
