Lower back pain is not usually a direct result of any issues with the muscles in the lower back. It might seem strange that muscles in the front and rear of the leg could cause lower back pain until you look closer at the anatomy of the human body and realise things are connected a lot more than may be obvious.β£

Any imbalance across the hips/pelvis is a common cause for lower back pain.β£

Holding any one posture for too long - sitting, driving, lying down, standing up, or overtraining can cause weakness, tension, or fatigue in the postural musclesβ£

Weak, underactive, or tight glutes can cause imbalances in the pelvis and hips.β£
β£
Tight glutes can cause as much lower back discomfort as weak glutes can, so overtraining these muscles or working in occupations that requires prolonged sitting can lead to tightness in the lower back.β£

A lot of occupations and lifestyles involve a lot of sitting and the hip flexors are forced to always be in a shortened position, leading to neural inactivity, tightness, and weakness.β£
β£
The pelvis could become rotated, which can cause imbalanced movements and an imbalanced bearing of weight across joints and muscle groups.β£

When the hamstrings are tight, they pull on the ischial tuberosity, also known as βthe sitting bonesβ, which tilts your pelvis backwards and flexing your lower back forwards. This negatively affects the alignment of the spine. The tighter the hamstrings are, the more they will pull.β£

When the quad muscles get really tight, they pull on the hip bone, which in turn tips the whole pelvis downward, or forward, into a position called anterior (forward) tilt of the pelvis.β£
β£
Because the spine wedges in between the two halves of the pelvis, if the pelvis is brought into an abnormal forward tilt by your tight quads, the lumbar spine can adopt more curvature than it is supposed to have.β£
