Without question, robust AAC DOES NOT hinder speech development 🙌

But this is only part of the truth. We have a responsibility to give the whole truth, the full picture, to empower people to take action based on what CAN happen, not just what won’t happen.

The truth is that AAC doesn’t just not hinder speech, it actually PROMOTES speech development.

We know that for some people speech will not be possible. When children are young we don’t know who will develop speech and who will not.

AND we know that AAC makes it more likely that a person will develop speech. Does that mean our goal with AAC is speech? No, it does not.

But it does mean we can proceed with confidence that introducing AAC is win win - it gives a means of communication WHILE giving a child the best chance of developing speech.

It’s up to us to accurately share the WHOLE picture.

✅AAC helps language

✅AAC helps communication

✅AAC helps cognition

✅AAC helps connection

✅AAC enables self determination, autonomy, freedom

AND

✅AAC helps speech development

The opportunity we have in 2024 to introduce high tech AAC to young autistic children means we’re at the start of one of the most exciting times in the history of communication.

Let’s hear more voices 💪🔥

There is no need to make a choice between nonverbal communication and words 🎉

We must truly respect a person’s nonverbal communication AND we must provide access to a full language, in a way that works for that child, and teach the child the power of language in all its forms 🙌

Words can be spoken but they can also be seen and touched 📱

It’s never too early to allow a child to see and touch words so they can understand and communicate easier and faster.

Every child has the right to access a full language, a robust language, words that give them the power and possibility to communicate for ALL the reasons they may need to.

And the only way for a child to learn the power of this language is for the people closest to them to get ahead of them. To learn the language, live the language, love the language 🥰

That’s what becomes a reality when we introduce high tech AAC (a communication app) combined with a path to successful communication that puts your family and your child first💪

When we freely give a child access to words that they can explore, learn, absorb, play with and use for communication, the potential is there for a child to say something unexpected.

Something no-one thought they would say.

A mum who completed my programme earlier this year messaged me with an update this week. Her 4 year old is a superb nonverbal communicator. He’s creative, persistent, flexible, resilient AND he has an AAC device.

He was in nursery with his AAC device and another boy tried to take it from him. From the THOUSANDS of words he has on his AAC device, this is what he said...
