Gardening club update....

The gardening club has been working since the spring on tending to the kitchen garden. With the hot summer sadly passing away, we thought it'd be an opportune time to harvest the last of our spring sowing. It was a mixed bag of results! The potatoes, strawberries and shallots were abundant, the courgettes somewhat oddly shaped, and the less said about our solitary tomato the better!

Still, the club was happy with the season's harvest, and will turn their hand to the autumn sowing very soon. Our gardening club is always looking for new members, so if you or a loved one would like to join, drop our activities team a line on 01463 711311 or email us on highview.activities@barchester.com.

It was (almost) a case of the African Queen as residents at Highview took to the ocean waves (well, Caledonian Canal) with our good friends at The Seagull Trust.

With help from carer Selene and activities coordinator Sharon, Captains June and Jack took helm and lead the cruise ship up the canal. Margaret Thompson accompanied the trip with a few sea shanties on the accordion. A fabulous nautical time was had by all.

We have a couple of trips left on the cruise coming up - to register interest please email the activities team on highview.activities@barchester.com.

🍎📚 The Kirkburn Classroom 🍏🎨

The team at Kirkburn Court Care Home in , Scotland, recently launched a new initiative called ‘The Kirkburn Classroom’.

The first session was led by Ina, a resident at the home, who took on the task of teaching everyone how to crochet.

Ina admitted she hadn’t done any crocheting for quite a while and warned she might be a bit rusty – but as soon as she picked up the hook and wool, she was off to a flying start!

She showed great patience helping everyone get started and all involved commented on how much they enjoyed the experience.

The team was pleased to report that almost everyone behaved well in class – with just a little bit of mischief.

What a fantastic afternoon. 👏

Stay tuned to find out who’ll be hosting the next class.

👑 A Royal Encounter to Remember 👑

It was a truly special day for Greta, Joan and Beryl, residents at Hilton Park Care Home in , Cambridge, as they had the remarkable opportunity to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla.

There were smiles, handshakes and heartfelt moments that everyone will remember. His Majesty asked the ladies how they were and whether they’d been well looked after. Greta, moved by the kindness shown, replied with a heartfelt “yes” - and became quite emotional.

Greta, Joan and Beryl had the privilege of meeting the royals and were lucky enough to exchange a few words with the King.

It’s never too late for a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

🎉 Bruce Turns 100 in True Highland Style at Seaview House 🎉

There was no quiet tea party for Bruce’s 100th birthday – the much-loved Navy veteran had other plans. From kilts and Highland dancers to fish and chips, live music and a showstopping cake, Bruce celebrated his milestone in style, surrounded by fellow residents, friends and family.

Bruce proudly wore full Highland attire, complete with the striking Highland Pride tartan, custom-made by Chisholms Highland Dress.

The day featured a piper parade, traditional dancing, a heartfelt ballad performed by a fellow resident and even some brilliant spoon playing.

The celebration ended on a royal note – with a birthday card from King Charles himself and a surprise invitation to the royal tent at the Mey Games.

Bruce’s verdict on the day?

“Yes…now I’ve started making a list for next year.”

Here’s to Bruce – Happy 100th Birthday! 👏

A big thank you to all involved in making this day such a success.

It was great news for our very own Sara Ortega (and perhaps even more so for her dentist) after she won the great Skittles guessing game at our recent summer garden party. Her guess of 1550 was closest to the actual total of 1430. Congratulations Sara!

Sara was just one of many of you who contributed so generously to our garden party festivities - we were delighted to have raised over £700 for the residents' fund, which supplements and supports activities throughout the year.

Look out for more competitions and fundraising draws throughout the year!

🦙 Close Encounters of the Furry Kind - Residents are Visited by Alpasta the Alpaca 🦙

Colleagues and residents at The Dales Care Home at were treated to a visit from a beautiful therapy pet.

Animals have a wonderful calming effect and the residents love to stroke them, talk to them and play with them so they all jumped at the chance to meet an alpaca.

The home was visited by Alpasta the alpaca from HART Animals for KIDS and caused a great deal of excitement.

Everyone truly enjoyed the visit, they petted and fed Alpasta who seemed to appreciate meeting his new friends.

What a fascinating experience. 👏

Barchester Care Awards – Divisional Winner!!!

Eat your heart out, Marcus Wareing, our winner is… Stewart Sturgeon, who has been crowned Chef of the Year for the North East & Scotland division. Next stop…the nationals!

Over 5,250 incredibly high-standard nominations were received this year. To demonstrate his cooking chops, Stewart took part in a gruelling (grilling?) Masterchef style cook-off against fellow chefs from across the region.... and came out victorious.

Chef Stewart will join winners from across the UK at a special awards event in October to celebrate their outstanding achievements and see if they’ve won a national award. We'll be broadcasting the lavish ceremony live to the home, so look out for further details on that - it's always one of the highlights of the activities year.

Huge congratulations from all the residents and staff, Chef!

Apparently, summer has been and gone in Inverness, but it is still warm (and just about dry) enough for a few more trips out with our good friends at Spokes For Folks .

Donnie, Richie and Sandy enjoyed an afternoon out, whizzing around Whin park, feeding the ducks at Bucht park, and watching the very expensive looking yachts heading up the Caledonian canal.

Dressed in a very fashionable tweed jacket, Richie declared the day "absolutely brilliant", while Sandy wise-cracked about the council needing to "get in gear and fix the potholes!"

We'll be continuing our bi-weekly runs out until the weather gets too cold (how long that will be is quite the question). To sign up, get in touch with our activities team at highview.activities@barchester.com

For those of you who were unable to attend our superb garden party, there are still a few chances for you to contribute to the residents' fund - and win some fabulous prizes.

First up, a whole mason jar of Skittles is up for grabs for those of you with a sweet tooth or in need of a sugar rush! Just guess the number of sweeties in the jar. A winner will be drawn on Friday, or sooner if somebody gets the exact number!

Secondly, our friend Carole Ann McNaughton has put together a fabulous pamper hamper.

And finally, you could be the lucky owner of a delicious hamper of treats (over 18s only!) by winning the monthly Activities draw.

You can find all of these at the entranceway or at reception, and all funds raised go directly to the residents' fund which supplements activities throughout the year.

To find out more, drop our friendly activities team an email at highview.activities@barchester.com
