🌟 Client Story: David’s Journey to Independence 🌟

David was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2004. As his condition progressed, he needed to explore vehicle adaptations that would allow him to continue driving safely and independently. Referred to Driveability Scotland by Motability, he attended an assessment at our outreach facility in Inverness, an experience he describes as life-changing.

✨ The impact of the assessment was profound:
“Afterward, my endorphins were through the roof. I knew I was finally going to get what I needed, and I can’t put into words how elated I felt knowing my independence was within reach again.”

💬 “The Inverness outreach facility is a Godsend,” he shared. “I spoke with people in Edinburgh, and they were saying there isn’t enough funding for more centres, so having this one is huge. It will help so many people regain their independence. I’ve already told all my doctors and occupational therapists, and everyone is excited about this opportunity. This will change lives for people in the Highlands.”

David’s story is a powerful reminder of how life changing the right support can be but, as David pointed out, many people in the Highlands faced significant barriers in accessing these vital assessments. This service is opening doors for hundreds of individuals, giving them not just mobility, but the freedom and confidence to live life on their own terms.

💡 His message to others?
“If you have the opportunity, just do it. If you want your independence, don’t hesitate, it’s absolutely worth it.”

When we are about and about with customers on test drives and mobility assessments we see some very poor pavements that aren’t safe to be on with mobility scooters and powerchairs. If you had to name and shame you local area, street and town/village what would hold the title for the worst pavement? If you have a picture to put with your comment even better.

🌍 Today we mark the UN International Day of Disabled People, a reminder that disabled people must not only be included in society, but also truly heard.

Article 29 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities affirms the right of disabled people to full participation in political and public life, including the right to vote, stand for election, influence decisions and shape policies that affect our lives.

Real inclusion means removing barriers, and not expecting disabled people to navigate them alone. That’s why initiatives like the Scottish Government’s Access to Elected Office Fund administered by Inclusion Scotland exist: to ensure that disabled candidates in Scotland’s elections can campaign and participate on equal terms.

Find out more about the fund or apply today:

Disabled people have the right to lead, to represent, to govern, and to bring lived experience into decision-making spaces.

Today — and every day — we advocate for that right.
