There are more good news out there....
We planted a woodland some 23 years ago with native Scots pine (a conifer) and birch (broadleaves). The woodland is growing well and the owner is investing in a precommercial thinning operation.
Poorer trees will be removed to let the others grow on!
Carbon will continue to be lock up, firewood is produced, wildlife and amenity benefits are created and the woodland can in time produce timber (both for biofuel and construction) and give shelter for cattle.
Each hectare of woodland is adding at least 8 cubic metres every year, which is roughly 4ton of carbon.
This is another example how economics and ecology can work together.
Forestry - The ultimate green industry.
