Broadcaster and journalist Nicky Campbell has spent decades in the public eye - known to millions for his work on BBC radio and television.

But he did not begin to confront the sexual and physical abuse he endured and witnessed at Edinburgh Academy until nearly 50 years later.

It was only in 2022, after his wife heard a BBC Radio 4 documentary investigating abuse in elite private schools, that Campbell recognised the name of a former teacher and realised the silence had lasted long enough.

Since then, he has spoken publicly for the first time about his own abuse, given evidence in court, and become a prominent campaigner for survivors through the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry.

His focus now is on the attempted extradition of former teacher Iain Wares from South Africa to face dozens of charges of sexual and physical abuse in Scotland. Survivors believe the scale of offending may be among the worst ever uncovered in the UK.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Campbell says of speaking out. “But it’s also the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Subject: Petition: Create a trauma-informed task force to develop a strategy to address trauma

We think trauma is an unaddressed public health issue, with no nationwide strategy to address it. We feel a coordinated, cross-sector, trauma-informed response is essential. We urge the Government to develop a trauma-informed taskforce to create a more compassionate, effective, equitable system.
