This doesn't just apply to developing a sense of responsibility, it also applies to self confidence, feeling capable, reducing anxiety and low mood too. Very often, well-meaning adults who want the best for their child or young person do everything for them, depriving the young person of valuable skills and experiences such as problem solving, learning to cope with failure, building resilience and experiencing feelings of achievement and accomplishment.
I suspect that recent generations have gone from being over strict to being over permissive, and society is now beginning to realise that neither of these help our children and young people to be their best self. Helping with household chores, conquering how to work the washing machine and having part-time jobs all build essential neural connections in the developing brain along with coping skills and mental resilience.
