Hart Fitness is 10 years old today! 🎉⠀

I’ve been humming and haying about what to say on this milestone; I sometimes struggle to put things like this into words.⠀

Earlier this week, I looked back at my very first Hart Fitness posts and, yes, I cringed a little… but it also reminded me that deep down, I’m still the same person.⠀

The same core values; to do my best to help everyone I work with. Educate myself and develop my own knowledge to continually provide clients the tools and support they need.⠀

Over the past 10 years, there have been plenty of highs and the occasional low, that’s part of running a business. Of course, the highs far outweigh the rest.⠀

There are so many memories but here are a few moments that pop off the top of my head 👇 ⠀

💪The early days of Friday morning circuits at Kellands Park, they were a weekly highlight.⠀

🫠Setting off the fire alarm and having to sheepishly call my landlord…⠀

🏋️‍♀️ Creating the Circuit 55 community⠀

🤓 The annual Festive Quizzes ⠀

🧠 Attending courses and conferences to continue my education, making friends along the way.⠀

⏰ The 24-hour PT-athon to raise money for CLAN⠀

😷The COVID pandemic, that one taught me more about resilience and adaptability than I ever expected.⠀

❤️The support of clients through surgeries, illnesses, the lockdowns, and starting a family.⠀

It’s that support, the people who’ve been part of the HF community past and present that’s kept Hart Fitness going. That’s is integral for any small business, and I am forever grateful.⠀

Thank you for being part of this journey and here’s to another 10 years. ⠀

❤️💪⠀

The hip adductor machine has become my new favourite piece of equipment, but more on that for another post.⠀

You might not know this, but I’ve been a personal trainer for 13 years and in the health & fitness industry for 18.⠀

I’ve coached hundreds of people to feel confident with exercise, educated them how to lift weights, as well as re-rack them…and basically tried to help make going to the gym less daunting.⠀

After my own a 11 year hiatus, I rejoined a local gym following an operation on my ankle. ⠀

And I have to admit I felt a bit lost and out of place.⠀

Despite all my experience, walking back into that space felt oddly intimidating.⠀

A different layout, new machines, and everyone looked like they knew exactly what they were doing while I was in the corner doing physio band work like a flamingo…⠀

…my balance isn’t the best, especially on one leg.⠀

I caught myself thinking, “Are they watching me? Judging my hip aeroplanes?”⠀

Spoiler: they weren’t. ⠀

If I’m honest, in my own curiosity there were moments when I caught myself watching others training for a split second.⠀

But they were all just doing the same thing as me.⠀

Working on their goals, be it trying to get a bit stronger, a little bit fitter, a bit more confident, etc…⠀

So if you’ve ever walked into a gym and felt out of place, you’re not alone.⠀

We all start somewhere.⠀

Confidence & competence grow with repetition.

Parties, BBQs and PipeBand Parades…⠀

…also the first time back fully loading the ankle in the gym with some Deadlift & Split Squat variations.⠀

All of which was easier than trying to carry a wriggling Willow on my shoulders around the park trying to find Chase from Paw Patrol…😅⠀

And a big shout out to Inverurie Events for putting on the fantastic Garioch PipeBand Championships today. 👏

5 weeks post op

This weekend has been all about paddling pools, BBQs and croquet.

The ankle has been significantly tested.

Improvements are ongoing but at the same time I have found it a fine balance not to over do it and leave it rather nippy.

At least Willow let’s me rest… 😅

The consultant follow up appointment to check the ankles post op recovery is scheduled for July.

I am also one month into being a gym member, more on that later this week.

4 weeks post op⠀

I am pleasantly surprised with the ankles recovery between weeks 2 & 4⠀

After my second physio appointment and first week back in the gym, the crutches are officially no longer required.⠀

The biggest test was probably this morning walking on some undulating trails around Castle Fraser with the Willow.⠀

Fortunately Willow has no problem is asking me if I am okay and if I need any help. 🥰⠀

The Hart Fitness members have also been incredibly supportive setting everything up in the studio.⠀

After an 11 year hiatus from attending a commercial gym, I have quickly fallen back in love.⠀

And I have no shame in saying that my favourite pieces of kit are the Prone Leg Curl & Adductor Machines, much to the amusement of some of the GPT members.⠀

The next step is properly loading the ankle by introducing some free weight single leg exercises, squats & deadlifts.⠀

I might even be back running a lot sooner that I had anticipated…but I’m trying not too get ahead of myself just yet.⠀

2 weeks post op

There have been plenty of highlights 👇

😆The family has been introduced to Bluey & Play-Doh and I clearly cannot get enough.

😎 There has been a lot of sunshine to which we have taken full advantage in the garden.

🤕On Friday I got my stitches out and had my first physio appointment @ ICPC.

After initial swelling of me probably overdoing the physio exercises the recovery is going well.

🧠 Two weeks has given me time to utilise the many LTB resources and continue my studies the forever advancing health & fitness industry.

🤘Annnnnnd Metallica tickets have been purchased for next year @ Hampden, the current residence of Aberdeen Scottish Cup holders.

💪It’s back to business as usual to the Hart Fitness studio this week

🏋️‍♀️Circuit 55 Spotlight 🔦 ⠀

Heather is one of the original members of the Circuit 55 class.⠀

Recently turning 70, she has been attending C55 for 9 years and still regularly refers to the classes as being one of her highlights of the week.⠀

In that time Heather has 👇 ⠀

🔋 Increased & maintained her strength, balance, energy & fitness⠀

🏋️‍♀️ Increased her competence and confidence doing strength exercises⠀

❤️ Finds her day to day activities as well keeping up with the grandchildren very manageable and a lot of fun⠀

😊 Has gained a friendship group who regularly enjoy weekly coffees and social events together, not to mention a WhatsApp chat that never stops ⠀

Here is what Heather had to say 👇 ⠀

What has been your biggest win starting C55 at Hart Fitness? ⠀

“Much stronger after is it 8-9 years of fantastic classes which I look forward to every week, they set me up for the day ahead. ⠀
Feel 10/10 when I leave the class. I love the challenges set, keeping me in a good place and as fit as possible at 70.”⠀

Describe your experience of attending the C55 classes? ⠀

“Every person I’ve met at the C55 classes have been a joy, a very special group of girls and boys who are a great support to one another whatever is going on in our lives. “⠀

Heather it is always a joy to have in you in the C55 classes, especially with all your knowledge on animals and their collective nouns. ⠀

😆❤️💪⠀

Now I’m not sure trying to play football on crutches after an ankle operation is recommended by the doctors..⠀
⠀.regardless of whether or not boyhood club won the Scottish club for only the second time in your lifetime.⠀

But you see, if there is one thing (to which there has been many) that I have been grateful for during my recovery, it is that I have an overall good level of strength & fitness.⠀

This is not something I considered pre op.⠀

But immediately was aware of upon wakening.⠀

The first 1-3 days I was unable to plant my foot on the floor, which meant a lot of single leg & upper body work.⠀

Not to mention huffing & puffing.⠀

And was simply to get to the toilet and have a shower.⠀

Seriously though, it is something I admit that I took for granted.⠀

So over the last week or so, I have actually spent a lot of my time reading about Sarcopenia⠀

And the potential risks to our health, due to low muscle mass and (potential) inevitable muscle loss as we age.⠀

I know I know, how very exciting.⠀

But it is a topic that now 13 years of being a PT, I have become more and more in tune with.⠀

Especially since studies suggest that from the age of 40 we could begin to lose as much as 0.5-1% muscle mass every year.⠀

This might seem unnoticeable at first.⠀

But over time could develop too potentially struggling with every day tasks that at one point we did with relative ease.⠀

Loss of strength, impaired function and greater risks of falls just to name a few of the potential outcomes.⠀

What can we do about?⠀

Quite a lot actually.⠀

Start (if you haven’t already) by trying to consistently do regular exercise.⠀

A mix of both cardio & strength if possible.⠀

For adherence it helps if you can make if fun & enjoyable.⠀

Expect more lively posts like this from me in the future…⠀

I’ll do my best to make them interesting reads.⠀

Thank you if you made it this far.⠀

Ps.I can guarantee I won’t be trying any football on crutches again.⠀

Pps. I did not fall or hurt myself however I did miss the goal a lot much, to the delight of Willow.⠀

Just over one week post op and I’m not going to lie, it has been challenging to keep my feet up.⠀

That was especially tested to the limit yesterday when Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years. 🏆 ⠀

At the current age of 35 I’m going to remember this one a lot more than the last. 😅⠀

The recovery so far has been really positive and provided a lot of quality family time with the Willow. ⠀

Looking forward to my first physio appointment on Friday, 2 weeks post op.⠀

Anyway this post was as much about an ankle update as it was about cataloguing a post about the Dons winning the cup 😆⠀

🤕 Injuries suck.⠀

If you’ve had one, or many you probably don’t need me to tell you that.⠀

Here’s a little story on mine. 👇 ⠀

On Friday I had an operation on my ankle following a fall running over 6 years ago.⠀

The fall itself was quite innocuous. ⠀

My ankle simply plummeted down a pot hole at the side of a country road…⠀

At the time there was no pain, I actually jog walked back home.⠀

However the next day my ankle was like a balloon.⠀

And so I treated it like a bad sprain, rest, ice, elevate etc…⠀

And after a few weeks I was back running.⠀

But things never quite felt right.⠀

I persevered with the help from great physios, trying to get miles back up but more and more niggles started to appear⠀

Ankle, knee, hip, back, shoulder niggles.⠀

Something along the chain was not quite right.⠀

In 2022, 4 years after the initial fall I was referred for an MRI.⠀

The scan revealed boney fragments splintered within the ankle joint probably caused from the trauma of the fall.⠀

And to the best of my understanding it is that that has lead to all the instability and compensatory niggles I have developed over the last wee while.⠀

So on Friday I finally had the surgery to get the area around the ankle joint smoothed over and washed out to remove the fragments.⠀

There were some other things that happened but I was still groggy from the anaesthetic when they told me. 😅⠀

Injuries are never nice.⠀

They can cause you to question so much, think irrationally as well as physically and mentally drain you.⠀

It has felt like quite a long road to get to this point.⠀

The next step is starting the rehab to recovery and the potential possibilities on future physical activities.

With the reality of routine and ‘normality’ soon to return tomorrow I took a moment to reflect on the Festive season. ⠀

The plan was to spend lots of time with family and friends as well as go adventuring.⠀

But other than Christmas Day (which was lovely) ⠀

The majority of the past two weeks were made up of colds, coughs and spluttering all on repeat 😷 ⠀

Fortunately the company was still good and together we made it to 9-10pm on Hogmanay..⠀
⠀.maybe we will see the Bells next year 😅⠀

The snow then fell and we discovered that Willow loved and loathed sledging at the same time 😅⠀

Together Willow and I started learning the drums, however to my dismay but not to my surprise she has a more promising future that I do… 🥁 ⠀

It may not have been the Festive season we had planned but it was a most enjoyable one all the same…well in between the coughing and disrupted sleeps. 😆⠀

One final thing I would say, is if your social media is like mine and cluttered with everyone already seemingly smashing their goals ( which is impressive btw ) please don’t feel overwhelmed if like me you’ve yet to get started or even think of any.⠀

That is okay. ☺️⠀

One thing myself and the HF members always look forward to in January is a habit building challenge to start setting foundational habits into our daily routine. ⠀

Therefore if and when inspiration strikes on an outcome goal, we have already laid some building blocks to make the process easier. ⠀

Start simple and grow from there.

I guess we now best be starting 2025. 👋
