A busy stadium schedule places continuous pressure on pitch performance.

At Accrington Stanley, Head Groundsman Ben Kay has overseen a surface used for first team fixtures, academy matches, training, and international games. Maintaining grass cover through these demands has been a key priority.

Since introducing ProSelect 1 Premium Pitch, the focus has been on steady establishment, reliable recovery, and maintaining surface quality throughout the year.

“It gives us strong colour in the summer and a resilient plant through the winter.”

The results were recognised with a Pitch of the Season award for 2024/25, reflecting the consistent work of the grounds team.

Grounds teams like Morecambe FC manage constant pressure to maintain safe, consistent playing surfaces.

As Head Groundsman, Tom Wells oversees a pitch subject to high fixture volumes, heavy wear in key areas and challenging conditions that can limit recovery. His renovation and overseeding programme included ProSelect 1 Premium Pitch to support establishment and durability where it matters most.

“We saw germination inside six days and strong recovery under heavy use, even without additional lighting,” says Tom.

His experience highlights the importance of reliable seed mixtures and turf management to maintain surface quality across a demanding season.

During , it’s important to recognise the work of turf professionals managing challenging environments.

At Sheffield Wednesday FC, Head Groundsman Lee Jackson continues to deliver strong results in a heavily shaded stadium with limited lighting and high levels of pitch use.

“Our biggest challenge is a very old, heavily shaded stadium with limited use of lighting rigs,” he explains. “Maintaining grass cover through the season is never straightforward.”

With nearly 10 years’ experience using ProSelect 1, it has remained a consistent part of his approach, supporting establishment, recovery and surface performance under pressure.

Seed selection is one of the most important decisions when managing an elite sports pitch.

In this article, Tom Tomlinson explores why diploid perennial ryegrass continues to play such a key role in stadium and high-performance training environments.

He looks at the differences between diploid and tetraploid ryegrass and explains how characteristics such as tiller density, sward structure and wear tolerance influence pitch stability, divot resistance and overall playing quality. These factors are becoming increasingly important as fixture schedules grow and recovery windows become shorter.
