In 2023, Headway Suffolk's Brainy dog scheme won a national award for innovation. We take rescue dogs and train them to be companion dogs to people with a neurological condition. Part of a brain injury is that people's personality changes ,resulting in friends and family walking away. The dogs give much needed unconditional love .We are struggling to gain funding to keep the project alive, so have set up a go fund page, so that you can help . https://www.gofundme.com/manage/brainy-dogs/transition
I had the pleasure last evening of training a group of Nannies on how to look children whose parents have a brain injury. If you would like training on brain injury/ neurological conditions or a speaker on the subject please email helenmfairweather@headwaysuffolk.org.uk

Headway is here to support brain injury survivors in Suffolk
Headway has provided specialised rehabilitation, therapy and support services to brain injury and stroke survivors and those with neurological conditions and their families in Suffolk for over 30 years.
This was done separately as East and West Suffolk, before merging to form Headway Suffolk in 2014.
We have two rehab hubs in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds and run ‘satellite’ hubs and dementia social support groups in community buildings and hospitals. We have ambitious and exciting plans to build a new rehab and housing provision in Suffolk.
Our dedicated team support users to rebuild their lives by improving their daily living skills, boosting self-confidence and increasing social engagement.
We also support individuals to live more independently in their own home and in the community, as well as accessing leisure activities.
Our team of clinical therapists and counsellors provide users with immeasurable support and run courses to help users and families understand the effects of brain injury.
Our Brainy Dogs service takes rescue dogs, trained by prisoners and vulnerable adults or teenagers, to become companion dogs to clients or centre dogs for rehab and therapy.
Eight people a day suffer a brain injury or a stroke in Suffolk and our mission is to ensure we provide the very best support available to every person who needs us.
