*Amber Heat Health Alert*

The UK Health Security Agency has now issued an Amber Heat Health Alert for some parts of England, valid until Monday 14 July at 9.00am, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C.

High temperatures can put people at risk, especially older adults, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. Health and care services may face more pressure, and indoor spaces could become dangerously warm.

Top tips to stay safe:

For clients:

• offer water regularly
• keep curtains/blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day
• encourage light, loose clothing
• avoid outings between 11am–3pm
• use fans or ventilation safely
• apply sunscreen and wear hats when outside
• watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, confusion, heavy sweating

For colleagues:

• stay hydrated and carry water with you
• take your breaks in cool or shaded places
• wear SPF 30+ if outdoors for long periods

Stay informed:

What is Complex Care?

Complex care is specialist support provided to individuals who have multiple or interrelated health issues that require a higher level of dedicated care and support than more standard care services.

Who can benefit from complex care?

Anyone with ongoing or complex care needs could benefit from complex care including:

• Individuals with degenerative conditions like dementia, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
• Stroke care
• Cancer care
• Individuals with physical disabilities such as muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy
• Individuals with respiratory conditions
• Anyone that is about to be discharged from a hospital but faces a substantial recovery process
• Anyone requiring a cost-effective alternative to residential care facilities or nursing homes
• Palliative / End of life care

Prestige Nursing & Care can provide you or a loved one with the care you need, from condition-led care to expert nurse-led care.

Happy Disability Pride Month!

Today we are shining the spotlight on Disability Pride Month which was founded in 1990 with the aim of raising awareness and promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities. It also creates conversations among people who are not part of the disabled community on how best to support people with disabilities.

In 2019 Ann Magill created the Disability Pride flag shown below with the colours representing each type of disability:

- Red – physical disabilities
- Gold/yellow – neurodivergence
- White – invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
- Blue – mental health conditions and illnesses
- Green – sensory disabilities

The Disability support services website has a list of things to know and do when supporting the dignity of disabled people. You can read these here https://ow.ly/QTZu50WkuBY

Want to get involved? Here are some events you can join:

- Scope are hosting a free online event on the 23rd July ‘Turning Prejudice into Pride’. You can join their free online event here https://ow.ly/Vtk050WkuBZ

- Inclusion talk series (Disability Pride Month) – boldly belong online event on the 22nd July. Register for your free ticket here https://ow.ly/bBgO50WkuCP
