This client would prefer to remain anonymous however he’s allowed me to share his journey of our work together so far.
We began working together 9 months ago after the initial reach out. It was a stressful time due to an ongoing divorce plus he felt he’d let himself go a little as he was someone who used to enjoy the gym and exercise regularly. His nutrition had suffered a long with longstanding poor sleep and increased anxiety.
The usual routine of onboarding a new 1-1 client. Case history taking, physical assessment, goal setting and we began on a journey towards better health with some physique and gym based goals to aim at to begin with.
Weekly check in’s provided the necessary data and information to ensure progress was made as easy as possible.
However, not everything improved.
Set backs due to cold’s, fevers and feelings of fatigue. Adequate energy intake for daily needs. Performance had took a little dive. We needed to dig deeper!
We reassessed again but did some further physical examination. Heart palpitations had increased (put down to ⬆️ anxiety), BP although not terrible had slowly climbed, noticeable reduce in ability to work at higher intensities (feeling short of breath). I recommended a GP visit and some blood tests were done.
The Blood tests have unearthed some clarity, this client was anaemic. Dr prescribed iron medication (3 months) with a blood (re)test planned.
What did we do:
Reduced Stress, this was initially in the amount of exercise being reduced and we doubled down on low intensity activity (dog walks).
Addressed nutrition deeper:
Nutrient Uptake, focus of improving digestion. B12 absorption (stomach acid is key). Meal planning to include Red Meat, Liver, Turkey (heme iron, most easily absorbed) backed up by plant sources such as greens, oats and beans (non heme). We added a source of vitamin C around meals as this boosts absorption. Reduced caffeine intake and no caffeine 1 hour pre eating. No deficit, ate at maintenance with adequate carbohydrates (reduced stress).
