Low risk, medium risk, high risk…
Entrant, controller, manager…

When you’re responsible for organising training, confined space requirements can get complicated fast. The right course depends on the level of risk involved, the working environment and the role of each person entering or managing the space.

From low risk environments with simple access and adequate ventilation, through to high risk spaces involving complex entry, hazardous atmospheres or rescue requirements; choosing the correct training is essential for keeping teams safe and compliant.

Citrus Training offers a range of confined space courses to support entrants, controllers, rescuers and supervisors.

Effective confined space training goes beyond delivery; it relies on engagement.

As our trainer Rob explains, when delegates actively participate, it creates the opportunity to draw on real-world experience, adding depth and practical context to every session.

This is where training becomes more impactful, supporting both competence and confidence in high-risk environments.

Bringing colleagues together both in person and online, the event focused on developing leadership capability, sharing experiences and creating space to exchange ideas and insights.💡

Attendees explored what great leadership looks like at Citrus, grounded in our values of humility, trust, collaboration and continuous improvement, and made personal pledges on how they will bring this to life in their roles.

Moments like these play an important role in strengthening leadership across Citrus, creating space to learn from one another, challenge thinking and continue growing together.

Kevin, one of our trainers, is sharing his top tip for staying safe when working in confined spaces 👇

It all starts with getting the risk assessment right.

As he explains, competence isn’t just about training. It’s a mix of skills, knowledge, attitude, training and experience, and every one of these matters when planning work in confined spaces.

For newer or less experienced team members, regular supervision makes a big difference. It helps ensure safety standards aren’t just understood, but actually followed on site.

For employers, taking this approach means safer working environments, stronger compliance, and more confident teams.

Myth: If you can’t see it, it’s not a risk.

Rob, one of our trainers, explains why that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In confined spaces, some of the most dangerous hazards are invisible including colourless, odourless gases that can escalate quickly.

With the right planning, preparation and equipment, these risks can be controlled.

Make sure your team is trained to recognise and manage what they can’t see.

Not all confined spaces are the same and treating them that way is where risk begins.

In this video, our trainer Kevin highlights that one of the most common misconceptions in confined space work is grouping every confined space environment together, rather than assessing each one on its own individual merit.

From varying hazards to different control measures, every confined space requires its own approach. Getting this right isn’t just best practice, it’s essential for keeping your people safe and your operations compliant.

At Citrus Training, we help teams build the knowledge and confidence to assess, plan and work safely in any confined space.
